just dropped my engine in and started it. started right up too and idles just fine. The engine has been sittin for awhile so i expected a lil blue smoke then level out right? well the smoke gets worse and worse.
Long story short i pop the turbo off and its got oil comin outta the exhaust side, that was what was causing the smoke.
Its a brand new to4e ebay turbo( roughly 200 bucks el cheapo).
Are these things that bad??? wtf? blown seal immediately?
I did loosen and re-position the housing so i wasnt pointing the IC pipes right into the fan. Did i mess up the seal by doing so?
btw i ran a comp test and all 4 cylinders are at 215psi. is that pretty good?

Assuming you have a the stock compression ratio, yes, that's good numbers for a compression test.
Repositioning the housing shouldn't cause anything to happen to the seals. It's made to be rotated. It's possible that you have a bad seal, that's sure what it sounds like.
I also bought a Ebay turbo, but I've had great luck with it.

got it from cxlighting. he wrote back today and said i need a "restrictor" on the oil feed line. what the ###?? how could that possibly help the seal. I already left him feedback over a month ago when i bought the turbo so i cant really threaten him with a neg feedbk to get him to do the right thing and send me a new one. should i go ahead and order a turbo rebuild kit? also i can wiggle the shaft a very small amount. keep in mind its brand new, is that normal?

ive heard horror stories of ebay turbos, guess theyre real....

post up the ebay site you've bought it from. I just bought a T3/T4 from Ebay to replace my PTE 5031 and swap out turbine housing. My ebay turbo works fine, boosted and pulls harder then PTE 5031. Just need to add the oil restrictor or you will blow your seals. I have two oil restrictor, one at the oil filter and one at the turbo. Also, you can feed it from your engine head. It produces less pressure from there and will not over flow your turbo.

Ensure to prime you Ebay turbo with oil prior to installation.

Boosting 25 psi on a new Ebay t3/t4, still working.

PS. I bought mines from CXRacing ebay.

didnt come with a restrictor. i used 4an steel line right from the back of the block to the oil feed flange on the turbo. if i crimped that line down a bit that would be the same as a restrictor right?
the guy gave me a ph number to call so maybe theyll replace it. can only hope....

just an update: the asshole over at cxlighting(where i got the turbo on ebay) told me he wont replace or even send a rebuild kit. This sux, now i have a credit card dispute going on and cant buy a new one til i know whats gonna happen. Car is up and running after a TON of work so im gettin anxious.

just a note to kinda watch for this guy on ebay. Ive heard plenty of good about cx but i figured i would share my experience anyway

There's no reason a new or freshly-rebuilt turbo should blow oil- especially at idle, unless it's having a severe drainage issue.

Be sure there are NO kinks in your oil drain, or that the oil drain line never dips below the oil pan inlet. If the oil has nowhere to go, it's going to exit through the turbine seal.

Ya i made sure of that. its a good 10" below the oil drain on the turbo so gravity will take care of it. i would have even settled for a rebuild kit from this jackoff but no luck. Anyone know how long a credit card dispute lasts? never had to do it before, usually people are, for the most part, honest.
