head gasket replacement

I want to replace my head gasket on my 420a and i was just wounder how long would it take to do it im smoking and im tired of it i feel like a walkin time bomb and is there anything else i have to replace while i do the head gasket

The timing belt and related components, including the water pump, would be a good idea. If you've never done a headgasket replacement before, it can take as long as twelve to fourteen hours (I'd set aside the weekend). Once you've done it once, though, it shouldn't take you more than about four to five hours.

Get an upper gasket kit while you're at it cause you'll end up replacing most of these anyway.. and new head bolts/head studs are necessary cause the stock ones stretch when torqued. Also make sure to use gasket spray on the MLS headgasket & exhaust manifold gasket. I would also recommend putting in fresh plugs cause, why the hell not? You're doing work anyhow

+1. Gives you The HG, the VC Gasket, and the head studs for about $106.
DO NOT HALF ASS THIS! You will regret it. You do it wrong, and you will have to do it all over.
I got a DSM wiseman buddy, and it took him 6 hours for everything.

A lot of gasket kits on ebay have the headbolts in there. First time I did my head I got it all packaged together.

If you don't have one already... BUY A MANUAL! Walks you through step-by-step. Really not too hard with some pizzas and couple cases of beer.

When you suggest picking up a manual before attempting a head gasket replacement, do you mean a factory service manual or just the standard Chilton's or Haynes service manuals?

Ebay kits often come with head bolts. I would caution against the kits with bolts because they use graphite headgaskets which only last 50k from what I've noticed.

If you go with an ebay gasket kit get one with the MLS headgasket and buy the bolt set seperately. You'll be happy that you went with the MLS because as long as you don't mess something up and have to pull it apart again you'll never need to replace the headgasket again.

As far as the manuals go I prefer the FSM and chiltons. The chiltons focuses on the 420a for most of their instructions. The FSM can be found online several places, do a search for it

Re-read my post. I said that the kits with the MLS headgasket don't come with head bolts. Your link reaffirms that statement. If you get a kit with head bolts the headgasket will be the graphite crap that will blow out again.

You misunderstand I felt it was more important to get a good kit w/a MLS gasket than headbolts. And I wanted to let him that I had good results from domestic gasket. I got my headbolts locally and they were cheaper. I should of put that thought in my original post.

But otherwise, yes, the ebay gasket kits are perfectly fine. Hell I just bought one for my car. I think it was the same seller
