When taking out my VSS, the yellow gear was missing... help! Is it too big to fall directly into the transmission?

Good luck...

It's in there somewhere. If you drop the tranny, I've been able to shake it near the hole and grab it outta there with some super needle nose pliers. Any other suggestions?

Question is, will it kill the transmission, I think it may have been floating around already before I pulled the sensor.

When bits of it end up in your bearings, the races will wear, bearings shot. Bits could get between the synchronizer cones and the gear, causing syncing (shifting) problems.

If you cannot see it in the hole, you will have to remove and open the transmission to find and remove the driven gear.

How long / hard is that to do?

To just remove, open, inspect, close, and install... If you are mechanically adept and have basic tools, expect several hours. (Don't plan to be doing anything else that day.) Could probably turn into a couple of days if you have never done this kind of work, or find yourself missing some tools.

Here is the 3.55 conversion wiki, it goes through how to open and close the transmission. It will give you an idea of what to expect. http://www.2gnt.com/index.php?d=3.55

Percentage chance that leaving it in the transmission will destroy it? LOL

The reason I ask is because I have never removed a transmission... ever.

I believe DSMCrazy3 is experiencing this same problem and it's slowly eating away at his transmission. I would say get it out asap if possible to avoid having to replace more parts.

My luck :/

I bought some right angled needle nosed pliers, so we'll start with that, maybe I can jolt it out with my finger just far enough so I can get it with the pliers.

Thanks!

If it's metal, use a magnetic wand.
That won't work, it's plastic...

Anywho, it slides outta that opening just perfect. So even if you manage to grab it with the pliers, you still gotta get it lined up just right to be able to pull it out. Good luck :thumb:

 Thanks for the vote of confidence man... :(

Just stick a flexible drinking straw in there and suck away ROFL .

seriously :| although it could work, remember ATF is extremely toxic and i would not recommend it)

Dropping a tranny is going to be an interesting endeavor if you have never done it before. I would suggest finding a friend (or two) and try it. The experience couldn't hurt and you would fix the problem. I was able to drop mine in about 4 ½ hours using just jack stands a few wrenches and an impact gun, its getting everything back together that can be the trick. Gook Luck!!

Does the engine have to come out? Please say no, please say no..... goooddddd please say no.

Nope...

I did it by myself in less than 3hrs I think the first time. After blowing like 3 trannies and a couple clutches last summer, it's cake now hahaha. It really is not hard at all bro. The most difficult part for me was just getting the damn axle outta the tranny haha. Even now I know the tricks to that as well LOL...and honestly, you could probably drop the tranny and just leave the axles in. That way you don't have to drain fluid etc. You can attempt to wiggle, shake, and pull that gear outta the hole...then if no luck, you can open her up.

A nice size prybar or monster screwdriver is nice to have. You'll need a big 32mm socket I believe it is for the axle nut. It's recommended that you might wanna get new cotter pins for each axle unless you can pull them out and get them back on in one piece. Besides that just some good ol metric sockets and elbow grease should do the trick.

On one care of mine, the yellow plastic gear that drives the VSS has been loose for over two years, I tell my speed using my garmin or speedometer application on my iPhone. I'll get in there soon and fix things.

On another car of mine the actual gear fell off the speed sensor when I was trying to take it off, should fish out pretty easy with a coat hanger or some other "hook". long thin needle nose helped me on a buddys car once as well.

Still on another car, I bought it and the tranny was making noise, turned out to be grinding the plastic gear up. drove fine the whole 600 miles back from spring break and another week or two before it finally grinded it up to stop making noise. Syncros were already on the outs before that so I tossed it when it was pulled.

Ultimately, I say if it was the sensor gear and not the tranny gear, get in there NOW and fish that thing out. My dumb luck should not be misconstrued as advice for you to follow.
