Since I am in the posting mood I am looking for opinions on a decent exhaust. That is QUIET.

I have had three different varities of OBX stailnless exhaust, N1 and SP style oh and the OEM. Its not that I am bothered by the constant ridicule from my "friends" about the pissed off weed eater or the pregnant bumble bee. But it really is starting to get annoying to me.

So I am looking for quiet exhaust, if I still had my oem I would gladly put it back on. It would be so nice to be able to talk to the person in the passenger seat without yelling, or hear my phone ring.

All that and I just put 5" straight exhaust on my 02 cummins, and think that one ridiculously insane loud vehicle is enough.

No.

The OEM exhaust is the only quiet version for you. A performance exhaust will be larger and more free flowing......hence louder.

A quiet exhaust is quiet because of all the restrictions in the path.

Just find one that meets your needs concerning performance and noise level.

Apexis' with silencers are still ridiculous. and they sound terrible.

YES you can get a quiet exhaust and it is at the expense of performance. You could eve get a decent performing exhaust while still be quiet.

I would suggest that A) use one or even two resonators inline. These cut down on the buzzing sound and do a good job in reducing the upper freqs.

Do not use a straight through muffler. Look at something from magnaflow that is a larger input and output, but has baffles and such. If you use 2 ~18 inch resonators (first about under the drivers seat, and the second one about 1.5 feet behind it in line) and a baffeled muffler that is meant to be quiet, you should end up with a very quiet exhuast. If you could find a very large displacement cars OEM muffler that would work as well. for instance, maybe your diesel trucks stock muffler.

I recently replaced my N1 style muffler with a Vibrant 3" single inlet, dual 2.5" outlet SS oval muffler which I really think sounds good (not nearly as loud and much more mellow in tone).

Magnaflow and Dynomax make similar mufflers :dsm:

You won't find a quiet exhaust without sacrificing performance.

DSM90- I think I've seen you around here somewhere...

BTW, is that avatar shot taken somewhere around rutledge?

We should meet up sometime. :thumb:

The stock GS-T Exhaust system is not bad. Its a little more free flowing, cheap and looks better then stock. I just have the axel back portion. And It sounds great under 4kRPM, but above that it sounds a lil raspy. But no where near bad as where I can't hear the passenger.

However if you get the whole cat back system rather then just the axel back portion, there is an extra resonator, so it would be even quieter.

Not to say these mufflers are "quiet", but are WAY less annoying than the N1 and better sounding than the single in/out 3" mufflers (all of which I've had at some time).

Also the one I have with the single in/dual out, there is a large chamber immediately inside with an aerofoil that divides the flow into the two internal 2.5' perforated pipes. So you actually have ~38% more flow area/sound absorption potential than a straight thru 3" muffler of same length.

Possible as I do frequent this site and DSR ;)

Wonder how a ext wastegate dump would work with stock exhaust :-O. Or maybe a cutout?

Been looking at magnaflow and such on summit. What about borla?

I have heard good things about the GST exhaust on the 420a's. I would just about give a testicle for the axle back part. If anyone has one for sale give me a shout.

ive heard a flowmaster exhaust on a neon. 2.5" pipe with a couple resonators and stock cat. IMO it sounded great. deep. absolutely no rasp.
have no idea how well it flowed though.

I would like to whack this muffler off and weld another one on, is that what the neon had just an aftermarket muffler?

I dont mind the performance hit so much as the noise.

i dont know if the neon comes with two resonators or one from the factory... it appeared to me they were both the same, about 18" long.

the muffler was just welded on, yes. i know flowmaster makes an exhaust for 4 cylinder tuners (60 series i believe) but i dont know if thats the one he had.

We talked for a few, i dont recall the specifics of the conversation. It was mostly about DSMs. he liked my car.

i have a Apex'i Downpipe, mated to a 2.5 in pipe that exits through an N1 exaust and my car is SUPER quiet until i go WOT...how quiet are you trying to go...like stock or lower...?

I know you don't mind the performance hit so much, but your forgeting that the turbo likes to breath, and when you choke your motor, your decreasing the life of it (IMO) alot faster then if you let your motor breathe.

With that said, the greddy evo 2 is one of the quiet exhaust that stills provides the performance you need. Companies like greddy and tanabe, ensure that the exhaust is below 95decibles for people wanting quiet rides.

P.S. Stock exhuast is just not an option. Whatever you do make sure your exhaust pipes stay at least at 2.5"

I'm useing a Tsudo cat back and ebay header. It's loud under heavy throttle but pretty good under cruiseing speed

you can put on a TWIN LOOP MUFFLER which will Improve torque in all range of speed. Provide temped and attractive exhaust sound; Not loud but High power

Um yeah. Riiiiiight. Please explain:

1) What is a "twin loop" muffler, and
2) How it improves torque in all range of speed.

Sorry, but your post reads like a bootleg, Chinese eBay ad.

i have a apexi WS on my NT. and it not loud. its noticalbe but its the quietest i ever heard compared to somthing similar such as the RSR.
as for a NT with turbo. shouldnt a GST fit? (find a GST Apexi WS)

I have a massive muffler on my exhaust from extreme motorsports. When going down the road at 55mph you can't really hear it. On the highway it drones a bit, but not too bad. On the outside of the car, it is quite loud. (turboback 2.5" exhaust BTW)

If your only concern is interior noise, you may want to consider some fatmat or similar sound deadener. If you do your whole car, you will be AMAZED!
