Hello all,
My name is john but all you guys can call me whatever. I have a mits. eclipse spyder gs and was wondering what would be the best way to go about putting a turbo kit on my car and what preperations i would need to do before that? any parts reccomended would be greatly appriciated. IF it is to much of a hassle trying to do the whole turbo kit thing then please tell me other ways to boost my hp. Everything is basically stock on the car when i bought the thing what they did was buy a aftermarket exaust and just welded it to the factory tubes(luaghed my ass off when i saw it). I don't really like cold air intakes for the fact of the rain issue...i am leaning more towards short ram intake. Any help or your inputs would be greatly appriciated....thanks again

what i basically mean is....before i try to bolt on a turbo kit is there anyhting i should replace first like hoses or pipes or injectors. Only reason i ask is becuase everything on the car is stock you sure just bolting on a turbo kit won't blow the engine? it is an automatic i know i will have to replace the tranny with manual.

What kit are you getting? If you run low boost your stock fuel system will be alright besides getting an fmu or something of that nature.

Well, i would start by getting a general idea of the condition of the engine, to determine if it worth turbo'ing at this point. Do the basic Compression, Vacuum and Leak down tests.

Having a good tune-up is a good idea. Plugs, wires, *fuel filter*, PCV, clean TB and IAC, etc...

Inspecting your cooling system would be wise. Check the hoses, waterpump, gaskets and such.

Cleaning the sludge out of your oil pan is always a good idea also, whether you turbo or not.

And whatever kit you would use for your engine would likely have its own placement for the air filter, so if your going to turbo your car, you needn't worry much about cold air/short ram intakes..

Fueling is extremely important. I am unaware of the capabilities of the 4g64, so I wont try to get into this myself.

Good luck.

When it comes to chaning plugs stick with a standard NGK plug (one range colder than stock if you can get them). Its one less problem you'll have to diagonose later during the install. P.S. Don't forget to fill up on premium gas before the install as well.

is there a website you guys recommend to get all new hoses? as for plugs wires and fuel filter what type of fuel filter would you reccomend? yes as you can guess this is a would be tuner starter newbe whatever you wanna call me. as for the turbo kit i am leaning towards the hahn stage one kit or the star stage one kit. so i basically have to do a major compression test huh? just to see if my car is up for the challenge so to say. and since i am going turbo wouldn't i have to buy turbo parts like a turbo fuel filter?

You should have a 2.4 4G64 engine, not a 2.0 420A. I'm pretty sure Hahn doesn't make a complete bolt-on kit for the 4G64. Not to worry though because your engine is very similar to the 2.0 4G63 in the factory turbo cars. Plus, you have an added 400cc of displacement. Once you make sure the maintenance is done, you can start accumulating your parts list for the turbo install. Here are a few pages that may help:

http://www.mirage-performance.com/sonata/index.html

http://www.4g64.com/users/raycer97/2g_parts.htm

Also, since I've heard it's easier to do on a spyder, maybe you'd also be interested in an AWD conversion?

by maintinance what do you mean just like a major tune up?....what all should i get for the maintinance part?...i am really sorry i am new to tuners
and as for AWD...i would like to do it but 2WD will suffice for now becuase turbo charging is a bit expensive...LOL. If i decide not to put a turbo on there what other ways can i increase the horsepower/torque?

by maintnence we mean make sure the car is in excellent working order before even attemptig to turbo the car. you must do a compression test to make sure the rings will even be able to take the abuse. and prepare you car as well for things that will be pushed to its limits like your fuel system for instance. you should definately make sure you have a new fuel filter on the car because you will be increasing fuel pressures dramatcally and we all know the filter needs to be clean. if you have any oil leaks fix them now becuase boosting will only make them worse. you could always use a can of seafoam too, before you fill up with premium and before the oil change. i would also look into a high flow catalytic converter until you can afford a gs-t exhaust or better. Another thing you can buy and ook up now are your gauges i would get oil pressure, boost, egt, and fuel pressure gauges. you can hook all them up prior to going turbo and save you a lot of time during the install.

If i decide not to put a turbo on there what other ways can i increase the horsepower/torque?

you need to find out what goals you want to achieve before even buying any parts. If you know for a fact that you want over 160whp out of your car then bolt on mods are out of the question. i understand the 2.4l is capable of more hp & torque while N/A then the 420a, but not enough to make most people content. for making power nothing beats turbocharging.

where would i go abouts getting a compression test done? how much pressure you think i should go for first when i test it?

I would HIGHLY recommend learning to do the compression test yourself. If you plan on turbocharging your car, you will benefit from knowing how to diagnose your own issues. Turbocharging an NT engine can bring a whole new set of problems, and the likelihood of problems occurring rise.

Diagnostic checks and tests are usually always easy to do. Compression test in particular, is kinda difficult to screw up, even for somebody who doesnt do much engine work.

To do a compression check yourself, buy a compression guage at your local parts store. It would likely have instructions. follow them. Otherwise:

1. Disable your fuel/ignition systems,
2. remove all plugs,
3. screw in gauge to cyl #1, (snug, dont want it leaking and giving a false reading)
4. hold throttle wide open,
5. and crank it over 6 or 7 or 9 or so times (until it stops building pressure)
6. record cylinder number, pressure, how many cranks it took to get there, and how smoothly/erratically it built the pressure.
7. repeat for cylinders 2, 3, and 4.

off the top of my head i dont know exactly what number you would be looking for, for your engine, but generally around 190-ish, i suppose. reading should not vary much from one to another. pressure should build within 7-9 cranks, and should also be similar among cylinders. pressure should build (kinda) smoothly, easing up on each rotation of the engine.

having higher compression pressures, like 215 and such is not uncommon, or unsafe, and is usually just carbon deposits. Higher numbers here make you less boost friendly, though. Can of MCCC works wonders.

If you insist on paying somebody else to do it, any local reputable mechanic can do it.

Good luck with your project.

thanks guys you have helped me beyond what i would have thought. i will try to do a compression test a.s.a.p. and get back to ya with the results.

thanks again,
john
