Since I don't know jack about this topic, I was hoping someone could give me some insight. I have a 95 talon esi, and just found that I have a bad intake-manifold gasket. I was going to replace it, but now I'm wondering about just swapping out the stock parts while I'm there with a new intake manifold and throttle body.

Is it worth doing this by regurds to horsepower or performance gain? If so, what can I expect from this? Since my engine is stock what could it handle as far as a throttle body goes? I noticed that there is different sizes as well......like I said, I don't know shit about this so any help in this matter would be great.

Thanks to all-:thumb:

If i was you i would just save you money on buying new parts and take your oem parts to a machine shop. definately the best bang for your buck and definately your most dependable option since you have no other mods at this time.

1. disconnect your throttle body from the intake manifold and remove the sensors
2. take your upper and lower intake manifolds off.
3. take your parts to a good experienced machine shop.
3. have them bore the throttle body to 55mm and of course port the upper intake manifold to 55mm to match it. get them both honed.
4. have them port the upper and lower intake manifold runners matching them to each other.
5. get new gaskets and reinstall. be careful and use proper torque specs, you break an ear on the manifold from overtightening and you waisted alot of money.

just my opinion of course good luck!

Your also going to want to buy a shortram intake to increase the velocity of the less turbulaint air coming from the air filter.

Just pick up an ebay one, and throw a K&N filter on it.

Thanks for the help. About how much does it usually run to have that done? I live in a somewhat small town so it's likely that they will try to charge out the ass. Also, you recogmended a short ram-air rather than a cold air intake, why is that? I'm still running on the stock air intake now, but with a K&N filter...I know, impresive :sneaky:

Thanks again-

Forgot one thing- what is the approximate hp gain from port and polishing the intake manifold? Since I really haven't modded anything yet I'm wondering if doing this would be worth the cash as compared to other things I could spend the cash on.

hey buddy welcome to the world of the 420a, well i have a full exhaust setup (header, racing cat, cat back) I actually thought i was making some HP, well a while back a decied to get the intake side of the head done too, well WOW, first of all the sound is amazing, second the power, All I have done to the intake side is a Ebay Cold Air Intake with a green filter( I reccomend them over K&N) my TB is ported to 55mm (you dont wnat to go bigger) and my intake manifold was port matched and honed out, i think i spent about 90$ on everything, which is a steal, considering i spent 300 on my header alone, and that didnt do crap, well all this stuff working together is actually pretty impressive, so I reccomend going at your intake :thumb:

It's much more risky to place the filter that close to the ground, as opposed to it sitting up in the engine bay. Especially when the gains from having it down that low really aren't too different from the gains of just having a short ram.

Don't ask how much horsepower you'll get from doing this or that. It's called bench racing, and highly frowned upon here.. Each motor is different and each result will be different. Too many variables.. The benefits of a nice port and polish are greater than just getting an intake system, but so is the price.

Put it this way, you'll notice a difference on your seat o pants dynometer.

You can go with a CAI if you feel like it, I did even though I lived in seattle, or you could just spend the money on a short ram, and spend the extra motney towards the intake manifold and TB.

The only time I even noticed a difference with my CAI, was when I bought the AEM one which located the filter infront of the wheel well on the driver side way out of the engine bay. But its not worth it to pay for that.

I would save your duckets and purchase a short ram for now, buy some other mods if you like, then later you can always upgrade to a CAI, or build a Cold air box, or you might even go turbo and by then you'll be getting ride of the intake anyways.

Go to a better name shop in a bigger town, take a short trip like 45 minutes to an hr whatever you need to do. Just get it done right. crappy machine work will cost you in the long run and good work is highly important on the throttle body. The smallest mistake makes for the worst idle if the throttle plate doesnt seal completely. For a good job on everything i listed. expect to pay a good $250.00 which is dirt cheap considering a MP TB, and venom/obx crap manifold, which is only the upper may i add, will cost you a good 500 easy.

Thanks for the replies and for straightening out the hp issue,LOL. Live and learn. Might have to give it a go since I'm having to replace the gasket anyways. There are a few shops in town I might check out. The problem is I don't know anyone who would recomend or review their work for me so all I can do is keep my fingers crossed till I get the finished product.

Anyone tried out the ram air system k&n has? I noticed a sizable difference off just replacing the OEM air filter with a k&n, so I'm thinking I might stick with them.
