i have an aem intake and i am trying to find an apexi N1 muffler and have a custom 2.5 inch cat-back made for it. my question is, with me having a 98 GS would a header make that much of a difference in performance and sound? if so let me know what brand to go with and which would be best(4-2-1, 4-1) thanks guys

the header will change the sound of the exhaust. i know a few people that have bought exhausts and then put the header on. they ended up being very disappointed in the sound. even though people do get a couple hp from a header, the manufacturer does a pretty good job to start with. i dont know how the 420a is but on my car (b16a) honda only used cast for the primary, right after it bends down i have a stainless steel b pipe. i agree with EvuFlea, just get your stock one ported.

DSM's come stock with headers? Wtf? I havent looked at mine (too lazy to take off heat shield just to look haha) but I'm sure its just a manifold and not headers. Youd think that aftermarket would get you more hp because of the difference in it(and/or torque)

im sure ill get some responses for this one but oh well:
just for an example of manufacturers doing a good job from the start, look at DC sports header for hondas, both of the 4 to 1 designs are right from the type r. the carb legal one is from the usdm type r, and jdm header which is not carb legal is from the jdm type r. like i said this was just an example.

Heh, exhaust manifold is a header. Also we DO NOT HAVE HEADERS. Thats like saying we have exhaust manifolds. No, we have one manifold as in one header :)

THe stock is a good design. Port it.

Can you port your exhaust manifold yourself? I'm just curious because there are no good performance shops around me and if its something I can do myself, I'd like to do it. Screw getting new headers, they changed the sound of my buddies exhaust totally on his 93 gs, and he only got 2 more horses out of it.
