Hello All

I am presently dressing up my engine...will there be any adverse effects under the hood if I lose my exhaust manifold heat shield. I am running a 1G non-turbo motor with stock manifold (for now)...I have a FIPK and am concerned about the extra hot air that may get into the mix if I remove my heat shield...also will there be a differance if I go to a 2G manifold or headers?

Any experience with this would be appreciated....thanks

John

well i have a 2g and i took my heat shield off cause it was craked and slightly discolored and i melted some wire harnesses. Needless to say its back on now just leave it on till you get a maifold or header!

im not sure about the 1g manifold but the 2g is ugly looking, just polished up your cover if you dont like it so much. i had no cover on mine for a while and nothing got hurt.

i now have a header, i dont see how it could melt something unless u got crazy heat coming off of it. because a header or better yet turbo runs just as hot or even hotter from the turbo.

granted some have shields most dont.

I had the 1g heat sheild off my 1g nt for a year with no problems. The 1g nt i dont think could really produce enough heat to cause problems. Never was a problem for me.

i also would not reccomend it - my buddy took his off and melted not only some wiring but both his fans - not good for the car

it was a 2g turbo talon - sorry, didn't specify - i still wouldn't do it anyway... just get a header and there won't be any question about it

and was it me or was it a damn b*tch for everyone else that took their headshield off? i literally had to cut two of the bolts out of that stupid thing and with how crammed the engine bay is cutting was NOT fun

Thanks for all of your opinions, I think that the general concensus is to leave it in place unless you were to go to headers...I will paint mine up and go from there for now...I also think that my bolts would be a bummer to remove there too as they haven't been turned in 12 years...

Thanks

(but in reality I had already painted it by the time I read this today)

I used some 1600 degree gloss black stuff from Canadian Tire, so far so good. I still would rather see the mainifold (2G) but it'll do for now....it looks a lot better than rust tho :)

well, actually if you take a peek at the engine pic I posted last night, it still looks pretty good. When I first did it, there was a slight hot paint smell but it has gone away and the only place it really oxidized was around the two upper bolts. I think it'll will do for now in any case...

jon i tried to pm you back but it didnt work so heres what i had to say.

oh ok i thought you wanted the manifold itself to be painted if its just the shield then your cool i guess i got mixed up.. well if you didnt paint it you could of polished it. i did my boys tsis cover and it looks great.. just get some steel wool and polish and go to town.. i painted my stock one too but didnt use no 1600.. just used it for shows. until igot my header.
so i never got to polsih my 2g one.. looks good though

Running the stock headers w/o the heat shield is probably not a good idea. If you're going to get aftermarket headers anyway, you can just wait til then cuz you have to take the heat shield of to install the headers. I have GReddy Headers and have been running w/o a heat shield and they have been performing GREAT, I recommend the GReddy headers if you're looking for some.

oh by the way... yes the heatshiled is the devil as we know it. I ended up cutting it with a dremel, taking the headers off and throwing them (with the heatshield) out into the street and yelling like Bruce Lee in Enter the Dragon).

i have a header one my 1g....and it actually makes it hotter under the hood.....because the stock cats iron is quite thick, therefore less heat makes it through. after a long drive, my intake manifold is boiling just from the header heat! i'm goin to exhaust wrap it next week. i definately don't recomond leaving it off.

I do not know if this is to late but have you thought about a header wrap it will give it a race car look and also hold some of the heat in and it is very cheap
