Going turbo...do I really need a turbo computer?

I was wondering why everyone says I need a turbo computer to install a turbo kit in my Non-Turbo eclipse. After all, the turbo computer only has 4 more cables than the non-turbo and they only serve the puspose of:

1- Retarding timing on knock
2- Running the boost gauge (no boost gauge on the N-T dash)
3- Opening the wastegate
4- Fuel pressure control

I honestly don't see the importance of running a turbo ecm unless you upgrade the cams and want to run the system as stock as possible, and if that's the case, just go and buy a turbo dsm.

In my opinion, the knock control can be controlled separatelly or just with careful tuning without the ecm having to retard the timing. I've tuned several V8's to make alot of power nad never had a knock sensor in my life, just a good ear and good gas on high compression, and alot of care for the motors.

The boost gauge has to be purchased anyways when going turbo and it comes with the fittings for manifold-referenced pressure.

The wastegate can be pressure-reference also, and most are. This eliminates the need for a stupid valve to control it.

Fuel pressure can be controlled via an Adjustable Fuel Pressure regulator which is always recommended for any kind of tuning and which should probably be bought anyways since the non-turbo cars run much higher fuel pressure than the turbo cars.

So I already have the turbo injectors in my car and I was going to finally pay for the afr but for the same money I got a good deal on a turbo setup and figured i don't really need the damn turbo ecm.

Anyone with any ideas?

Just a few questions though for when I do my n/t 2 turbo conversion.

You said knock can be controlled with something else. What other things can control the damn pre-detonation? It's actually needed from what I've heard of you can blow a rod through your block. Is there such thing as a standalone knock sensor then?

Boost guage, wastegate opening and fuel pressure control can be eliminated by aftermarket means. But knock sensor man, it's needed.

Anyone knows a way around it, please tell me.

the j&s safe guard system controls knock and timing on individuals cyls its awesome... not to expensive either if u turbo your n/a u dont need the turbo computer knock sensor is not needed to run a turbo, a nice feature i suppose but if tuned right and with knowledge of air fuel ratios and egt #'s and tuning expirence u wont need one...

exactly, besides, if I really wanted to keep an eye on engine knock...then I'd buy an aftermarket knock sensor unit like Jeg's part #121-8964 from MSD. Much nicer than just guessing if the ecm is retarding timing.
