hey guys. i was refered here by some of my buds on www.dom-vs-import.com

yes i drive a mustang, but dont just flame me for it. im not gonna flame you guys, so dont flame me. was just wondering.... ive met this chick with an eclipse. its a slow ass little thing. just the bottom of the line, stock auto eclipse. but she wants to pour some money into making it faster and louder. so i offered to help, but i dunno a damn thing about eclipses. all i know about it stangs. i was thinkin maybe exhaust and CAI would make her happy. what you guys think? she is on a very low budget right now, so i need something cheap, or that i can install myself. you know? thanks for the help guys!

Welcome. I'm moving this where it can get the best responses.

hey thanks man. got any suggestions though? she also wants some body work done. any ideas on a good body kit for an eclipse, that would be within a high school budget?

I doubt getting a kit and then getting it put on would be on a high school budget, unless she saves up for it. A quality body kit would cost atleast 6-700 and then you would have to pay to get it installed and painted. Importfan.com sells some quality kits from what I heard.

As far as performance, the auto 2G NT eclipses are pretty slow. Stock they are either low 18 to high 17 second cars, with an exhaust, CAI and header Ive seen one get a mid 17 in the 1320. If she really wants it to be fast, tell her to start saving her pennies and buy a turbo kit or nitrous, with that her auto should be in the low 15's to high 14's at stage 2 levels. The kits can be found at www.turbosystem.com www.turboGS.com and www.newedgeracing.com

how about buying seperate pieces. like first buying a spoiler, and then a front splitter, and stuff.

does she want the car to be fast or look it? SPoilers wont do anything on her RS, its a FWD car. Do the free mods (hey they are free!) and a CAI and exhaust always help. But if she is looking for serious speed she has to either go with forced induction or nitrous, or get everything ported and polished, cam timing adjustment ... dont people realize ther eis a tuning guide and a parts guide up top?

First of all, you shouldn't take advantage of highschool girls :p hahaha, I'm joking.

Listen, from experience I've learned that you can't hand out every card to girls or they'll go crazy with the car and forget that you even exist, go figure :)

I suggest a muffler first, then a cat-back, then headers ( in that order)

The you can start making little tricks like rewiring the fuel pump with bigger gauge wires to get those nice 12V to the pump. Go to the VFAQ in the links section to find out how to do it. It's cheap, easy and she'll see that you are spending time on her car.

Don't go crazy hacking the air can, chicks want a reliable car and "stock" is good, don't ask me, but it is, no clue why.

Get a good set of NGK plugs, but whatever you do, stay away from platinum or the car will run like #@%#@%#@%#@%. Also get a good set of wires in the process.

You can disconnect the throttle body coolant bypass and re-route it for a small power gain. Also, disconnecting the pcv and putting a small filter in the valve cover will give it that "tuned" look and might help a little tiny bit.

Finally if the car is not a california vehicle, you can cut a piece of gasket, cut a pepsi can (has to be pepsi) and make the shape of the EGR valve (under the throttle body) then put the metal, and the gasket to seal off the EGR valve and prevent hot exhaust air from entering the intake.

These are alot of mods that might last you for a couple of months and might give you alot of rewards in the process. Remember, the car wont be much faster, but she'll think it is :p

With the headers and full exhaust, she might abuse some civics out there.

haha, well like i said, im a 17 year old. im a senior in high school. haha, so she is easily legal for me. she is 16. anyway. sounds good. but the pepsi can sounds ghetto as hell. haha. ill definitely try alot of this stuff though! thanks guys! anything else?

Trust me, it has to be pepsi, coke cans are too soft and sprite...well, don't even think about it. The point is the material from the cans makes for a perfect sized metal which is thin enough to cut but strong enough to prevent leakeage. Just cut a piece of the can (about 1 inch square) and drill the two holes for the bolts that hold the egr valve, do the same for the gasket piece. I'm sure your mustang has something similar, my Camaro had an egr, and instead of buying a new intake manifold, I just blocked it. But if you are using that thin metal, you have to reinstall the egr valve to press it against the head. Otherwise get a strong piece of metal and bolt it and eliminate the valve completely and save about 1/2 pound weight :) this should be good for about 0.0001 secs in the 1/4 mile :p

haha. well it doesnt sound as ghetto now that you explained it better. thanks man. any other cheap things? like, is there any cheap appearance crap? like i know the 99+ stangs can move the spoiler back a few inches, to be flush with the back bumper, instead of flush with the trunklid. it looks much better. is there anything cheap like that, to do?

"Modding a DSM" and "cheap" don't go together.

Face it, if she wants to seriously mod it, she's gonna have to save up or buy stuff gradually. It's not gonna happen in one night unless you win the lottery.

well yea, that goes with every car. i mean, i get things for my car probably, bi-weekly at the quickest. i dunno what im gonna do with her. ill find something. haha. maybe i can get her to go domestic ;) haha. oh well. thanks for all the help guys. ill let ya know if we get anything done on it.

If her car didn't come with the spoiler kit, then you could go to the junkyard and get the rear wing, and side spoilers off another eclipse or talon and paint to match.

Also another cheap trick is to cut the spring in the front ONLY about 3/4 of an inch, and if she doesn't have 16" wheels, get them from another Eclipse or Talon, much more aggressive stance and car might be a little bit faster.

for the eclipse, is the spring wrapped around the shock? because then i would need a spring compressor, and i dont have one. the mustang springs are just straight off. no compressor needed.

u can get a cai intake from ebay for around 60-80$ shipped i got mine for 64$shipped thats a decent upgrade...

a gst muffler from a junk yard or somone that upgraded theirs is always a good one...

you can get the CAI that cheap? im just about to get CAI for mine, and its like, 134$ which isnt too bad.. but its alot more than 64$!!!!

yea.. for her car, i dont need name brand! haha. however for my car on the other hand.... everything MAC! haha.

A lot of these replies are BS  For a N/A DSM, you should try making a Home Depot cold air intake for the car. You can put some mesh in the front fender and other little cheap things that'll make her think you're building some dream racing machine ;) There really aren't any cheap worthwhile mods on a non-turbo AFAIK.

agreed. i kinda bogged out on the modding her car business though. haha. me and her got in a fight recently, so... no modding for her car. on the other hand, i just ordered my pulleys, and installed my MAC CAI yesterday! :D
