Ever since I got me car (95 GS)about a year and half ago, I have had problems with the belts and pulleys. First it started with squeeky belts and as of the past 6 months it has been shredding belts. I have shredded 3 belts (always the accessories belt) in those 6 months and the power steering pulley and the one right below it (forget which one it is right now...not the ac) have been replaced. Anyways, two nights ago on friday I went to the track to see what I could do with all the new mods that were put on over the winter. I said I was only going to do two runs at the most and the first run was a 16.6 and I missed second gear on the second run. Not wanting to leave with crap times I decided to go once more, having a gut feeling it probably wasn't a good idea. My last run I ran a 16.3, which was the highlight of the night. As I went to bang the u-turn at the end of the quarter, there was no power steering, which felt all too familiar. After I got the time slip, I noticed the battery light was on. I pulled over and my firend who is a mechanic took a look at the car. Both the accessory and the alternator belts were completely gone. I was very pissed and had to have AAA tow me all the way back to MA. My mechanic says he thinks it was the underdrive pulley that has been causing all the problems, so I have already ordered the af/x one last night (a lot sooner than I wanted to get this mod). Everytime he (mechanic)puts belts on the pullies they come off when the car is turned on. I was looking at the stock pulley and it seemes that the side of the pulley that runs the accessories has no lip to keep the belt on, like all the other pullies The pulley should be here by tuesday so all I can do is wait. Has anyone else had problems with pullies or am I the only one? I have been wanting the overdrive pulley so I guess I have an excuse now. Any input would be great. Thanks for dealing with my ramblings. -Erik

did you get overdrive pulleys too? or just the underdrive pulley? ive never had this problem, but dont buy any new belts, cause the AF/X one comes wiht 2 of them. if the stock pulley doesnt have a lip to hold it on, thats probably the problem, the belts are probably sliding off. why is the underdrive pulley way to soon for you? 2gnt says thats one of the best, and earliest mods.

Yeh, no need to fix that before going racing.

Sounds like the harmonic balancer has been dead since before you got the car.

I am trying to remember where I read it but I did read of a service bulletin on 95-96 dsms about a belt alignment problem. I don't know if this applies to your situation but you might want to look into it.

I will look for the link...I found it on alldata but I am not a subscriber

It caught my eye because I constantly look for known problems with power steering on vehicles to help my customers informed...I work for a power steering rebuilder

No I just got the underdriv pulley...the power steering pulley was from another eclipse and the other pulley was from the dealer. Ya I wasn't planning on new belts cuz I did hear the underdrive came with belts. I just wasn't expecting to buy it last night, but was going to originally get it in a month or so, but am excited to see and feel the new mod.

"There's a TSB for power steering belt alignment problems. If the vehicle was built prior to sept 19, 1997 calls for the replacement of the poewr steering pump bracket and idler pulley with new with revised parts. If the car was built after the above date then the pulley can be shimmed. Ask your local dealership this: "If I buy the parts for this TSB from your dealership will you provide me with a copy of the TSB?" You can probably just talk with the parts person since they're the ones who get paid comission off of your purchase. No TSB, no comission.

the NHTSA id numbers are 18231 (power steering pump) & 2954 (belt alignment). The Technical Service bulletin id for the latter is TSB9837A005 date - 10/01/98

This is all I could find...sorry I could not find out more...maybe you continue the search
