Okay,so I have this friend at work who's thinking of sellin' his Cavaliar & buying a Mitsu 3000GT non-turbo(he can't afford a VR4).Anyhow,I thought I'd ask you all if ther's any potential in tuning it.I'm pretty sure his doen'st have the money to go turbo so it's staynin' N/A.I mean, with your basic bolt ons like E/I/H can he go fast.I realize I should have posted this on a 3000GT forum but I'm not registered on one & would'nt spend enouh time on one to count. So does anyone have any ideas?

My friend would be really happy with like high 13s,low 14s.Do you think that's possible without it costing as much as a house?

i think mid 14's would be possible with minor mods. go nitrous tho if he wants the best bang for the buck (75 shot maybe). from what i hear...3000's are tough to work on.

Yeah,I don't know as much about them as I do DSMs,but I think they way like 3800 lbs!Plus the base six-cylinder engine only pruduces 160 or so hp.But he loves them & wants to be different. From what I hear from people,he's got a long way to go.Also, does anyone know if parts are pretty expensive for them?

i believe they have about 220hp. i'd assume parts are expensive considering they are also far and few between.

There's 3 models if I'm right on this.Base model with a 160 hp six, step up one notch & you get 220,and then there's the almighty VR4 with 320hp.Anyone correct me if I'm wrong.:)

i don't know where you got that info, but all STD & SL are around 222hp and the vr4 is 320hp. i just looked it up. check www.edmunds.com for yourself. only difference in STD & SL are some trim options and features (sunroof, etc.). i could see 160 if it was a 4banger...but for a 6?? that would be pitiful.

Oh,man your right. I'm sorry. I'm not sure where I read that, but it must have been for another car or something. So I guess 3000GTs are not as slow as I thought they were. I've been thinking of getting a compainion car for Veronica(that's my car's name),and I might just get a 3000GT myself. 220 hp not bad to start off with.

i was at the national gathering this year, n/ts ran at best mid-low 14's. The fastest was an sl that dropped a twin turbo in and ran about low 13's (maybe high 12's). After market is expanding but still parts are very expensive and rare. To go fast that would not be the car to purchase

don't know how much i'd trust edmunds.com.. they don't know apples from oranges.. read their article about 2g dsm's.. apparently 96-99 dsm's are 1st generation.. what happend to 90-94's? and 95's what happened to those??? and stock 1/4 mile time is 19 seconds as they say.. check it out..

hmmmmm, well maybe they're wrong. i've always looked there for car specs. hell, just get the SL to be safe:thumb:

Until 1997, the nonturbo (base and SL) 3000GTs had 220 HP. In 1997, they did a very bad thing, they made the base model with a SOHC head and the HP rating dropped to 161HP and 185 lbs of torque. All of the nonturbos are slow because of their weight, but I guess if I had to choose, I would pick an early base model for the weight savings. The only way to make them fast is to push them off of a cliff. I would expect a 0-60 time in the low 3s and a top speed of about 190 because of their aerodynamics. Yup, other then that, the nonturbos are slow. Unless, of course, you do a swap with the VR-4 motor, and make yourself a VR-2... Then again, being front wheel drive with no limited slip differential, the V and the R would be dropped. Those 2 letters refer to the viscous coupling and the AWS system. Actually, it would just be a 2. Well, not really, because of the open differential, it is a peg leg. how about the 3000GT 1? Now I am rambling... Either way, though, they are beautiful cars, and worthy of the :dsm: badge.

i've been looking into 3000's a bit and the n/a's (220hp) seem to be about as fast as a turbo eclipse. personally, i'd rather have the eclipse if i wanted speed because there's more parts available...but the 3000 has some killer looks, imo.

The 3s is pretty damn heavy too. and that 220hp is on a v-shaped 6-cylinder motor, unlike the turbocharged 4-banger turbo, producing the same amount of power :)

yes theyre pretty damn heavy but you guys act like us 2g eclipse guys are light the 2g weighs like 2,850 lbs. thats damn heavy too. especially for a small car. the 3000 gt is like 3200 or 3300 lbs. a civic is like 2500 lbs. come on now were some overweight fuc*ers too.:dsm:
