HI all, I drive a 97 Eclipse Gs. and i have just started moding my car. and since im still in highschool, im pretty short on money. therefore I decided to get a Generic brand of short ram intake instead of brand names like Aem or injen or wateva. here is the link to the ebay auction.... wat do u guys think? like is there accually a big difference between the aem and this one? thx for helping.

really i dont think there is much of a difference between an aem intake and a generic one, your pretty much paying for the name just like you would if you were buying some nike shoes, just the only thing you will want to make sure of is that you have a k&n filter and not a generic one because you will mess up your motor if u dont have one. good luck

Um... I'll need to buy a K&N filter? for it? Y would that mess up my engine if i dont have one? just curious. And do u think the intake i had on my original post is good enough?

the thing with those generic parts is fitment. you might have to "massage" the thing a bit to get it to fit right. the air filters, in my experience, are fairly good though. i've had a generic air filter on my car for over a year now no problems. just make sure u oil it.

Nex for all the advise, can i ask how much gain did u get in hp and do u accually feel it? and another thing is that what do u mean by oiling it?

K&n has a filter charger, it comes with a filter cleaner, then some oil charge that they have for their filters, its to help keep crud and stuff from entering your engine, if you dont want to spend the money on a k&n thats your choice, but i would never put a generic filter on mine, but thats just me, the reason i say that is because different filters dont filter as good, thats why i prefer k&n, and yea that intake in there is fine

Ok, I would get a K&N or a Matrix Filter. They are right, I loved my K&N (Some DICK WEED STOLE IT OF MY CAI) So I thought I would get a Matrix This time. I like them both The matirx I have is louder when you get on the gas (you can really hear it suck air) but im sure K&N would be the best choice. This is a little off the subject but this winter I pulled my CAI tube apart and turned it into a short ram because of snow and slush. My car seem sto be running better now when its this cold with it being a short ram, whats up with that?. But when summer hits I will of course put the rest of the CAI tube on. :thumb: good luck:dsm:

I wish I would have thought of that, we had flooding awhile back and I had to drive through about 18 inches of water, my car died and i had to spend $400 getting sensors replaced. and about a cheap CAI I had one for about 3 weeks and the bracket broke off of it. so you get what you pay for, even though its just a pipe.

you're not going to feel much in terms of hp with this alone. thing you will notice is the extra engine noise.

I dont think its an HP increase...its more of throttle response...When you step on it it will feel stronger and respond quicker...plus sound a whole lot meaner...

yeah I spent a good chunk of change, on a Reactive CAI and The damn bracket broke. Damn Motor Flex...LOL

dude dont buy an in take off of ebay i bought a CAI and hated it. i am saving my money again to buy a ractive SRI. But until then i have the pipe that comes off the intake manifold attached to the filter. i dont notice any power or throttle response but this is probably due to how close the filter is to the engine and exhuast mani. So all it is providing now is that bad a** sound when u rev it. ya know that sucking sound.
sounds almost as good as a blow off valve.

once again thx alot for all the feed back its really great. so i decided to go with the aem short ram intake. Do you guys know where to get a good deal on it? i'v searched alot of the online stores and the cheapest one run around 92 bucks. i was just wondering is that the bottom or can i get it for cheaper. well thx alot.

What makes a "Ractive" any better than an Ebay intake? As far as im concerned...Ractive blows! What, they specialize in neons, shift knobs, and...oh yeah, led winshield washer nozzle tips!

the ractive intake will place the filter further away from the motor
then where mine is now. i know ractive isn't really a good performance
manufacturer but i don't have a job and its only 63 bucks at circuit city.
so when i get my taxes back i can go pick it up. thats the only reason
i'm getting that one.

You know i think those 15-20 buck ebay intakes are a decent deal. Cause from what i can gather i dont think "cold air intake" will ever give you power you can really feel. They give you two things; looks and sound. When i bought my 96 gs.. the stock intake was half missiong with just the plastic tube and a old style cone filter duckt taped to the end of it (i love duct tape) so i bought a 20 buck bombz intake from there. I can tell you right now that after a month the blue rubber pieace will discolor, and the one i bought at least takes some creative fitment. But damm I love the sound that thing makes when i punch it and it looks good as long as you dont have to read aem of some brand when you look at it.

I spent a lot of time in the import tuning industry in the mid-late 90's and back then DC Sports and RS Akimoto ruled the market. One thing I noticed about their stainless intakes is that they are extremely prone to heating up, which certainly affects the air intake charge.

In contrast, I installed an AEM CAI (zirconium) the other night, beat the crap out of the car for an hour or so and it was still cool to the touch despite the increase in heat generated from my header. So there is a difference in air intake charge density, but I doubt it does anything significant. I'm certainly sold on the quality and fit of the AEM units though and I'd recommend them to anyone with the cash to buy them.

In the end, as long as there's a quality filter on the end of whatever CAI you buy, you should be fine.

I know another good intake on the market is ICEMAN. They are made of plastic and don't get near as warm as anything else. I think there around 220 dollars at driverfx.com
