My bud has a 98 spyder with completly stock engine... Question is.. there is a black plastic hollow box that is attached to the intake pipe between the mas and tb. what the hell is the purpose of that box?

i think it's there to collect some of the oil from the vent in the valve cover so you don't suck tons of oil into the throttle body.
 
it's mounted with its base up, maybe it catches oil vapor.. don't know.. I'll have to pop in my dsm service manual cd and see if I can find it.
 
according to the mitsubishi CAPS (parts search program) it's a resonator. interesting, but why?
 
Quiet down the intake!

Non-turbo spyders are for 80yr old men who live in Florida. They don't expect people to mod them. Same reason the RS/GS has no speed governor, they figure we won't add enough power to go fast anyway.
