Making custom oil cooler

I have an ams bottom end that has the 90 oil filter housing installed that is set up for an external oil cooler. I saw advance auto and auto zone both sell transmission coolers that seem like they would fit perfectly and the lines woulid bolt right up to. Is there a reason NOT to use this? Is the pressure drop too high or the cooling efficiency just not there? Personally I didn't see why it wouldn't work, but I figured I'd ask on here before I go through with it. Thoughts?

It probably wont flow enough. Usually oil coolers have like 5/8" or 3/4" line running to them and most tranny coolers have like 5/16" or 1/4"

I have the largest B&M tranny cooler from jegs.. the 'race' one. it works just fine - doesn't drop too much pressure and the cooling is insane. it has 3/4" inlet/outlets on it, i had to step them down to 5/8" i believe for -6AN lines. works perfect, flows great.

Save your money. Just grab a 1990 oil cooler from a junker. To flush it, buy some cheap oil and run it through to clear out any gunk that's in there. Use AN lines to run from the 90's style pump to the cooler itself. Mach V sells adapters which work great. I'll post some pictures of my setup tomorrow, right now I'm not on the right computer. If you have any questions feel free to ask. Oh, also since it came with a cooler from the factory, there is absolutely no reason not to use it, that's what it was designed for . Why the air cooled version, because it's so much more efficient that the later model's water cooled version.

with that big of a turbo, being only oil cooled... I'd get a bigger cooler if you're looking for longevity. that's just my personal thought.

which ever you go with, make sure it is a sandwich type. do a search for Setrab and you will see what I mean.

There are probably a few 90 oil coolers on eBay - simplest route, as stated before

Dsmotorsport has a kit that would work nicely

I built mine out of a Setrab + parts from Jegs for about $250 - that does not include the housing I had to buy from MachV or the washers with rubber seals.

my set up cost $100 completed, and my oil cooler is massive, try long aka tru cool oil coolers, there great and cheap. i have pics in my info

You can put together a set of -6 AN lines from Summit Racing for $80 even with the expensive metric adapters. If you buy some autozone cooler you'd probably save $10 from what I paid.

I run no oil cooler at all on my car. I'm using the mighty max filter housing for clearance and there are no provisions for one.

I just ordered the external oil cooler housing from dsmotorsport.com. New engine, might as well get a new oil cooler and have ease of mind that nothing is going to get in my bearings and make them bad.
