DIN Radio Pocket [Merged 12-6] filler box cubby hole trim

My factory stereo is the 4" cassette player w/equalizer. I want to put a 1 DIN size CD/Stereo in along with having that storage pocket down below. Where is the best place to get this type of installation kit. I see Crutchfield has some good specials but I do NOT like their installation kit:

I would much rather have one like this:

Should I just purchase a stereo/install kit form cardomain.com?

I don't think the second one will fit your car, it's for 95 and up Eclipse, if you were planning to use it in a 91.

But, I bought the Scosche kit. It looks nice, and went in pretty well. I just had to modify it some to fit right and so I could screw the new head unit into the stock brackets. Simple to do if you have a dremel tool.

I bought it off of Ebay for $15 total. If you're buying the factory harness adapter too, might as well just get them both from SoundDomain.

since you live in tallmadge just go over to century 2000 on tallmadge avenue and get their metra kit - i always get my kits from there

Yeah you dont need a kit. I had the tape player underneath the regular radio. I just used the stock brackets, took the basket thing off the new head unit, and screwd the stock brakets into the Alpine, and just didnt put in the tape player. For that empty space I took a peice of balsa wood, sanded it to plastic like texture, and painted it flat black. It fits in there perfect and looks stock

I got one from the dealer a couple of years ago, works perfectly. MB 522080
At first I bought one from an audio store, I ended up throwing it out of the window :thumb:

I just ordered mine from www.mitsubishiparts.com for $25.08 (including shipping + tax)!!! It's worth every penny to have a clean install that is functional. Thanks for the info, can't wait to :rocks: !!!

This option is the best and worth the money. I work in a Car audio store and used many dif kits this worked out the best. DONT buy from car domain its a hassle and you Dont get the same Knowledge of the Industry that only a specialty shop can provide.

So I am going to be ripping out the stock stereo and putting in a new one. But what is the thing called that will go in under the cd player that takes up the slot and acts like a little shelf thing for cds? Black and made of plastic where can I buy one?

CD install kit??? Anywhere you are buying the CD player will have one for your model car. Circuit City / Best Buy / JC Whitney, etc.

Haha. No he is talking about this little shelf you can install in place of the factory cassette player, you know how there's two slots one for the cd player and one for the cassette player, or whatever else is in there.

He's talking about this right here: http://bestkits.com/ViewImage.aspx?img=i/bkmitk890.jpg It would help if you listed what year your car is Tigglebitties, because this kit is for 95-01.

I believe you'll have to try calling them or e-mailing them here: http://bestkits.com/contact.aspx Because I see nowhere to order on the website itself. Just tell them your Year, make, and model, and that you're looking for a stereo install kit /w the pocket. Good luck.

It's just a mounting kit.
Any stereo shop should have one. Or Best Buy or Circuit City..I've seen some bad quality ones from those stores, though..so I'd just find a shop that specializes in car stereos. Or buy it online.

The Scosche mounting kit is mediocre-quality plastic. For reasons unknown, they drop the radio mount about ¼" from the top of the DIN opening, and for the space under it provide a smallish box which is set up to hold two full-size CD jewel cases, with a bit of space left over. It's meant for a DIN mounting sleeve for the stereo, and has no ISO screw mount provisions. I suspect it may have been designed to save time for thieves, as a moderate yank should shear the plastic mounting ears straight out of the dash without waking the neighbor's dog.
The kit that Crutchfield supplies has no box, just a cover over the hole. I'm not sure who makes it, and haven't had my hands on it to feel how cheezy it is.

The Mitsubishi box which you're looking for is "MB877180 Stereo Box" and goes for a bit under $20. It has ISO screw mounts on the sides and will mount directly to the steel DSM factory mounts. However, being DIN/ISO, anyone's box should mount. You also may find the Avenger part to be cheaper, but I don't have a part number for it. Using the DIN/ISO part will mount the stereo at the top (or, bottom, if you're keen on working around the shifter for everything) of the radio opening instead of the Scosche lowering.

The Galant uses a covered box, I don't know how adaptable it might be. Because of ISO, most Japanese radio pockets should work.

These were on eBay for $20, but I don't know if I'd trust the things to hold up in a dashboard (heat damage from the sun), and I doubt they'd clear the shifter in 5th. The listing title had been "JDM HONDA CIVIC CRX PRELUDE INTEGRA CONSOLE CD HOLDER" so you might want to search "jdm cd".

This one's kind of slick. It's European, is kind of stupid since all the radios have clocks anymore, and I think Raph said the cost was $180 WTF

i work for circuit city, the kit you need is model number MET997001. that is the mounting kit and you can get a small snap in pocket to replace the eq slot. or you can just try to use the factory brackets and screw them into the new radio and buy a universal pocket model number MET 88009000 and screw that in below it. it may not be a perfect fit but if your a true dsmer you can make it work. :thumb:

Where can I find the "compartment" to fill the secondary DIN slot below the radio? I've read some stuff about fabricating my own, and I might do that if I can't find something stock-ish to fit there. I might eventually fill it with an equalizer, but not right now or soon.

isnt there a two din converter kit? I know theres something of the sort because its in my car (its basically a piece of plastic convering the remind of it... but firends bought an actual kit that had a "pocket" instead)

i'm postive you can find them at any good car audio store... try best buy

dont say there isnt one because i know for a fact there is. if you can't find one

plastic+torch = fun

The factory part is MB877180 Stereo Box. You can use most DIN boxes, I used one from a Galant, with the door on it. If your shifter allows room for CD swapping, you can mount the stereo on the bottom. The kit from Scosche uses a stupid off-spec box that's smaller, although it fills the hole without gaps.

I made my own inset for that slot. I cut a piece of cardboard out of a shoebox top and covered it in blue fabric to match my headliner and then cut little slots in it and inserted on of those metal "eclipse" name plates from the trim inside by the doors and attached it to the radio trim piece. It looks sweet! I cant upload the pic because it says it is to large but there is a pic of my homemade panel in my gallery.

Has anyone seen/or converted a Double DIN radio to a 1 DIN OEM radio and would there be roo for a 1 DIN in-dash monitor?

Also will a 99-01 1 DIN OEM radio work without splicing wires in a 97-99?

You said OEM radio? Are you implying that you picked up just a regular 1 din radio eg sony, panasonic, aiwa, etc..? If so, you should be able to just go out and buy a wire harness for your car, then using the wire harness that came with the OEM, match the connections and then it's a simple task of mounting the radio in the slot and also mounting the 1 din monitor. I've done several installs like this on other cars and have always found it easier to just buy a wire harness. You can ever buy the wire harness at best buy or any installer shop. As for wiring the monitor, I think that will require soem splicing. I've just run new lines to my fuse block before and inserted it into an unused portion along with installign a fuse there for redundancy to the inline fuse on the monitor. IMO, it's easier to change out the fuse on the block than to rip into the dash to get to the fuse on the radio or monitor.

Any Mitsubishi, or Infinity radio built for Mitsubishi installation will plug into a 2G Eclipse or Talon. Depending on the specific radio, you will probably have to unplug the speaker harness from the amp under the passenger seat, if now equipped. The DIN hole left will accomodate virtually any DIN electronic device on the market.
If a 1-DIN monitor is available (the market's still too rich for me to look into), it will fit. The room behind the Eclipse/Talon radio is a cave. It will also most likely fit the factory brackets as well.
