New to forums , New 99 Eclipse , Need help with mods

Hello DSM forum members. I am new to the DSM world and just bought my 1999 Mitsubishi eclipse 2.0 turbo. Im 19 years old just looking for a nice car to play with.

I did just the basics for now ....
Current Mods:
* New battery
* Trany flush
* Engine flush
* New Plugs and wires
* New Distributer cap

What im looking to achieve is a nice looking car ... something that will Pull nice off the line. 2 step launch controll, exhaust , bov , gauges , ect ....

My question for the forums is, what mods should i do first to make my car Perform better. ( with a limited budget )

I don't know much about the car and tuning besides basics ......

I will be doing all upgrades myself-

What is the difference between a chipped ecu ...... and a performance chip ?

Is your car an automatic?
I do not recommend getting an engine flush - pretty much ever. I don't want to give you more things to worry about but if it's been happily driving since the engine flush I'd imagine you made out ok.
It is very unlikely you have replaced your distributor cap since a DSM does not have one. Did someone do it for you and tell you that is what they did?
Use only NGK BPR6ES plugs or their equivalent(i.e. autolite 63's, BP6ES etc,). Avoid iridium and platinum, they tend to be overly expensive for less performance and more knock.

Also, please spend the next 4 days of your life reading everything there is to read on this website. Things like your "performance ship" question quickly become clear but I'll throw you a bone on this one. "Performance chips" essentially do not exist for our platform (and likely many many others). But you see them all over eBay anyways. "GAIN 15HP! GAIN 50HP and GAIN 10MPG!!" It's all a lie. What the "chip" is is simply a resister that goes inline with the MAS. The car reads less air being drawn in and leans out the mixture. This practice is both dangerous and without any measurable benefit. Avoid it.

"Chipping" your ECU is likely not something you would jump into because you have a 99. A 99 comes with a black plastic cased ECU that is flashable from the factory. No need to track down a 95-97 ECU and get a supporting freelancer to solder in a new socket for the DSMlink chip.

I hope that at least makes the mud a little thinner.

it's nice to meet you and umm... welcome to your new addiction =)

since you are doing all your own modifications, i would first look at Vfaq. and get a haynes or chilton manual becuase that is were you want to start, Please make sure you do all the proper maintance FIRST i.e. timing belt, water pump, etc.etc.... after all that has been done than do alot of READING, being that you are still very new to the DSM scene just read about how your car works. Im not saying anything bad but most people who start out just want to go fast without doing the proper maintence than it breaks and they all complain that our cars suck blah,blah,blah...you get the idea. =) when you are ready to upgrade TAKE BABY STEPS, becuase you don't want to slap on all these nice and shiny parts than have a bunch of issues with the car running right and don't know were to start. Since you have a 99gsx with the FLASHABLE ECU, i would look into CEDDY MODS and TACTRIX cable. GOODLUCK MAN & WELCOME TO THE DSM WORLD

The first thing I will tell you is you have to pick two of these three items.

1. Fast
2. Reliable
3. Cheap

Keep in mind pick 2, because you can't have all 3. People have 400whp cars that they drive daily because they have spent the money on good mods. Try to stay away from ebay and buy something with a warranty. I've always said I dont make enough money to buy cheap parts, because you could buy the cheap $350 intake manifold from ebay, or spend 550 from JMF, but you go with the chear one, it cracks, now your car doesn't run, then you have it fixed and it cracks again, and you could have just saved the money and bought the good part first.

Not talking down to you at all, just want to set you on the correct path.

Do some searches on here for parts, the classifieds are a great place to find good parts for cheap. Also look through the build journals and see what everyone is doing to these cars.

ok .. can any local shop Flash and tune my eclipse , or do i have to take it to a dyno ?

You're moving too quickly maybe. ECUflash tuning is typically done by yourself but there are exceptions. I would put tuning on the back burner for right now and ensure that all maintenance has been performed, you have no boost leaks and then start playing with various free mods. RE-wiring your fuel pump is a great way to get your hands dirty while maintaining a difficulty factor of about 1.

Do you have a boost gauge? That is usually the very first "mod".

Intake, exhaust, gauges, AFPR, fuel pump, clutch, tuning software, MBC, turbo, injectors, FMIC, BOV.... There is a start to finish on what your asking... A "chip" is actually a tuning device that you wire in and do yourself, or pay someone on a dyno.

Start with exhaust hard intercooler piping get rid of that 2g bov check out the free mods!
