I am re-installing my cas and am unsure of the gold ring that looks like a double slotted socket that goes up against the intake cam. I forgot if the wider slot faces up or down. does anyone know?

is this what you are talking about ?

This is correct alignment for TDC

He drives a 98 and from what little I know you've got a picture of a 1g cas. When I did my cas I got lucky by putting it right. There's only 2 ways to do it so if one doesn't work try the other.

mine has a gold cup that attaches to the cam, the back of the cup looks like the top of that 1g cas.

Bringing this one back from the grave because I'm wondering the same thing and he's never gotten an answer.
With the no.1 cylinder at TDC, does the CAS inside piece (attached to the intake shaft) orientate itself like picture 1 or 2??

Btw, It's a 97-99 CAS sensor.

This is the last thing stopping me from getting my car up and running! :D

this is picture 1......

and this is picture 2. (wouldn't let me attach both of them to one post for some reason.....)
Sooo, is the big gap at the top or the bottom??

If the "big gap" you're referring to is the the one partially circled in the attachment below, then it goes on the bottom/firewall side. The mark circled is the identification mark for aligning the piece. With the engine at TDC and the intake camshaft sprocket's alignment pin at twelve o'clock, that mark should be 90 degrees from the alignment pin on the firewall side of the head.
