as the title says.. im trying to decide what type of turbo will get me to the 500whp mark without breaking the bank. im not really looking for broud response's; "just get a 35r youll never have to upgrade again" or " the question is to vague, there alot of turbos that will get you there". which turbo will produce a 500whp goal on a AWD platform(using e85 and all supporting mods) that is not obnoxiously large, and at the same time light on the pockets?

i may sound like im asking for to much, or you may say that " no such turbo exsist's" but i wanna hear what you guys think....

anything from FP is breaking the bank. holsets would probably be the cheapest, toughest, and most power for the money.

a nice hx40 with a .55 mitsu housing will have NO problems getting you to or ABOVE 500whp.

I'd also like to know the suggestions for this kind of turbo. Used gt35r's are what I usually find.

there are MANY holset threads with tons of info on this site. read up on them, and you should run the turbo with zero problems.

honestly, if you want to spend under a 1,000 dollars but want more than 450hp the holsets are the only way to go.

you dont even need the hx40 for 500whp.... im pretty sure i saw an hx35 run a 135mph trap and it was upwards of 600whp.
go on dodge forums and you can probly buy a hx35 for 350shiipped if you find a good deal. buy the bep housing and your set to go. 500whp:hellyeah:

Thats what im doing anyway :shhh:

and if it breaks just spend 300 and buy another one!!!!! you can buy 3 of those for the price of 1 of another.... sounds good to me :)

sounds like u guys all agree on the the hx-40/hx-35 route. ive never stuck my hands in anything other than mhi turbos...so, what would one need to make this work.. effectively and safely. it seems like the way people are using their holset setups and threading about it, are the ones with the failures. im a firm believer in doing things once. also i heard that the bep housing dont come in an iinternal variant...is this true?

True, but if i was going to do a used holset i would still go to goldfarb and get a hx40 that was pulled right off the truck for $275. Then buy the bep housing and still hit my mark and not be workin the turbo as hard. Thats a 600+ turbo for just over 500 smacks :shhh:. What it boils down to is a lil less lag vs more room up top I guess. :idontknow:

Yeah man, HX40 is where it's at. 7 threads on the Holset line itelsef and then more information on top of that. If you are concerned about the oiling issues, get a oil pressure gauge or borrow one to measure what your puressure is at the head and OFH. If you are within spec, then you'll be fine with the oil issue. The only other issue I've heard was with the HX40 breaking shafts but it's not exactly common. Every and any product will have failures, on here people will say what's going on. I wouldn't be concerned by it but make sure you are at the proper oil pressure for the turbo.

Talk to this guy on here jusmx141 . He buys sells rebuilds turbos and not only will he sell you a turbo for a reasonable price he will tell you anything you want to know about the turbo your buying or interested in. He will prob agree with holsets being best bang for buck turbo but he might come up with something else you never know.

I am into the holset thing and cant wait to slap one on, cheap power. I found a couple of guys who build cummings and they get rid of turbos for cheap. They parted with one for 100 bucks no shaft play and i have another hx35 im picking up for 100.

HX-35 in a bolt on BEP housing, Search holset and read on the 7 threads about it. It will bolt onto your stock manifold and exhaust for around $500 give or take plus it will get you 500 hp easiy

Holset HX35 in a .70 T3 housing, or a HX40 in a bolt-on housing. Can't count out the BW S259 in either housing, although you're going to find a Holset much cheaper unless you're lucky enough to get a deal on a BW turbo from your local John Deere dealer.

The HX35 will be near the end of it's rope at 500whp, the HX40 will have a lot of potential left- especially if you get a HX40 in a .70 T3 housing.

I'm biased but Holset HX40. Bought mine for $525 freshly rebuilt from Goldfarb and Associates in MD.

I've done better price-wise in the past, although I haven't seen any good deals on 6-blade HX40's lately. I've had more than enough 8-blades come my way, though....and an 8-blade HX40 is enough to push the flow of the BEP bolt-on turbine housing.

Yeah except that they last a whole 2000 miles :barf:.....
Still longer than most PTE turbos.

How long did your Holset last, and at what boost level?

Diesel Turbos just aren't made to hold up to the higher EGTs of a gasoline engine. Diesel Engines run way cooler...

Some turbos many may not realize came from Diesel platforms:
  • FP Red (Fuso diesel truck turbine wheel and famous 60-1 diesel compressor)
  • FP Green (same turbine as FP Red with the 50-trim compressor that Garrett uses on their drop in turbo for a Cummins 6bt)
  • Garrett 60-trim compressor, P-Trim turbine (Ford 7.8 diesel 6 cylinder)
  • gt35r (upgrade to the Powerstroke Diesel)
  • TD06 20G/18G (mitsubishi fuso)
  • It is rumored the Small 16G was built for a small diesel platform (which would put the evo3 16g turbine in the diesel list)

anything from FP is breaking the bank. holsets would probably be the cheapest, toughest, and most power for the money.

mine has about 4k miles on it and is holding up perfect!!

Ive been doing some photo browsing and these things seem to be huge!! im definitely not going to get away going the internal wastegate route.Unfortunately . i live in south Florida, and i need both my fans( or i will overheat). have any of you had any clearnce issues?

I had mine internally gated with both fans. No clearance issues but i had no powersteering and I'm a 1g. I'm not sure if that made a difference. Now I'm externally gated but off the o2 housing and it recirc'd back into the downpipe.
