for some reason i cannot turn the camshaft freely when i put a set of cam caps on my rebuilt head from 2 other heads it makes no difference. someone lost the original caps...
i didnt think there was a difference, im stumped on this one? im not really positve what year the head is, but id was pulled from a 91 AWD 5 speed talon. but there definatly isnt 90k on it in fact its almost brand new, so it was replaced at one point.

so are there dirrerences between the caps? are they all different (line bored)? how do i tell what year head this is. it does not have a 2.0L stamped into the spot above the water neck.. g67 is there...

oh man.... maybe someone put an elantra head on a awd turbo car? what other identifying mark are there and where to look, i definaly don't want to use a 124hp head
on a 400hp motor..

HELP :talon:

Something to consider; It may be cheaper to get a complete salvage head to work on, as opposed to having your spare head line bored with new caps.

Well, it's that I spent a lot building that head. And, where I live I can have the head line bored for about $75-80 by a machine shop. I recently found someone selling them(all 12) for $75, is that a good offer or what price should I look for?? Thanks for any help!!

well after changing the head i cant seem to tighten the caps for the exhaust cam past hand tight without making the cam super hard to move. I have to get a ratchet and use lots of torque to move it when the bolts are torqued to spec. have the right cam in there, anyone have any ideas:confused:

1. Are these cam caps the original caps from this particular head?

2. If yes, did you reinstall them in the proper and original positions?

3. Did you torque them in the proper order?

had to swap heads and the caps are from the original head. does this mean i have to buy brand new ones or what?

btw anyone have the proper order? i looked in the manual and can't seem to find it. thanks in advance

You can't mix cam caps and heads because they're machined (line bored) with the head, you need the caps from the head you swapped in. Even if you buy new caps, you will still need to machine them with the head you're putting them on. Conclusion, never buy a head without the original CAM caps. While we are on the subject of caps, please use proper capitalization when posting in tech sections.

The Chilton one.
I just looked in my FSM and Hanes, neither one gives you the numbers on top of the caps but both emphasized to keep them in proper order and orientation if removed so you probably didn't study the manual before removing them. I just looked at the extra head I have here and the orders are as follow.

-> I5 I4 I3 I2 I1

-> E5 E4 E3 E2 E1

I = intake, E = exhaust, -> = the last cap counting from the CAM gears, all labels should be read right side up when looking at the head from the passenger side.

This information is useless to you at this point since the caps are not paired up with the correct head. DO NOT try to turn the engine on like this, your CAMs will lock up and your replacement head will be TRASHED. Good luck.

The old caps will have to be align-honed to the new head. This involves taking a flycut on the lower mating surface of the caps, mounting them, then cutting their radius to match that of the head's.

Looks like you've got your caps in the wrong spot. That's seriously seriously bad for camshaft life.

Notice how the arrows should be pointed - OUT.

Notice the I1, I2, etc and E1, E2, etc marks marking I for Intake and E for Exhaust side. They all should be able to be read from the passenger side of the car.

If you follow that, you CANNOT mess it up unless you have caps from the wrong head.

I am taking my head off for the first time ever, and I am expecting whatever I can.

It seems that "L" and "R" cam caps were put on backwards. L&R seems to be a "90" thing as opposed to "E" and "I".

Isn't the bottom line simply that I have to put the cam caps back where I found them?

Thanks!

Ok, got the picture up after your post.

Any thought on the above?

The cam caps at the top would be the left side of the valve cover if you are facing the engine.

This is exactly how I found the cam caps when I removed the valve cover and the cams?

Do I need to put the cam cams back the way that I found them even though they are all obviously out of order?

Thanks!

The markings look correct to me. At least from judging by the other pic in the link absolute_dsm posted. Just put them back how you found them, just l;ike defiant said, if they were on a running motor they are probably okay.

Any mad scientist try to resurface a bottom end of the cam caps.Some kid today told me he had his done after they were damaged.Now correct me if I'm wrong Ive never heard no Sh*t like that.I think if it was possible everyone wouldn't be buying new heads all the time.I just had to share and see If anyone else has heard this before.I just cant see it being done.If it is possible then imma stop throwing my heads away cause as long as Ive been around cars i never heard of it being done LOL
