Sherwood Park,
No, this is not a 420A to 4363 swap thread.

As a TSi owner, a friend of mine has asked if I want to do an engine swap on his girlfriends car. The car is a 1996 Talon ES, A/T with a blown motor. He has bought a complete engine from a local seller from a 1999(or 1997 he doesn't know) Eclipse equiped with a 5 speed.

My question to you fellows is:
If I switch over the flywheel from the 1996 blown engine to the donor engine to accept the automatic tranny, will everything else bolt up with no hickups?
Is there any wiring / sizing differences between a 1996 420A and a 1997 or 1999 420A that would be of concern in this swap.

Basicly, is this swap feasable and worth my time?

-Sean

Good stuff locke, Thanks again for the help. Ill give it all the once over tomorrow, but its super greasey in there. Should I wash that all out and then give it a frest coat of grease when installing the new TOB?

I coated the engine bay tonight with black thick rustoleum like paint...almost like an undercoating. Its kind of orange peelish, but will for sure keep the rust along with water from getting to my frame there. Ill post up some pics after the gym tonight to show you guys my progress. It not comming along to bad.

Heres some quick pics ( everyone loves pics ) Anyways the red one all stripped and sanded/washed and then the first coat of paint....I painted this my 50 dollar paint job way. It didnt come out to shabby...havnt wet sanded it or anything. There silver car is the donor for my Talon which sits on the left of the RED now gray car. ITs confusing but Ill snap all the good pics in the up and comming days.

On another note I broke of the inner lower compression arm bolt; in the damn subframe.:notgood: I got it drilled out today but I took about 1/2 the threads with it radial wise...So Im contemplating what to do there. a bolt will thread so Im going to see if it will hold enough to make me feel safe. Ill keep the good.bad news comming :sneaky:

Well my black car started up today first try after priming...I'm happy about that! Now I just have to throw a T-belt on my old motor and toss it in the red RS. Thanks for the help so far guys. Ill get some good pics up here soon.

Also I scored full tan leather, 96 awd sideskirts and all the pieces I needed for 6o bucks locally. Project is comming along great!

Heres some of those pics as promised...this is just before it was complete so dont mind all the clutter.

The motor mounts are a pain = vibration, but my concern is the exhaust I made...I didnt want to much of a note over stock so Ill have to weld up something else since it alittle louder than I would have liked.

okay thank you. I already have the fuel rail off the 96' from using an injector so that will make it easier.

It's not the injectors you need to worry about it's the FPR. Early '96 models had it on the fuel rail, while later models had it by the fuel tank. Also, you might need to swap the... Cam senor? I think that it's you know what i'm talking about once you go connect your harness to all the sensors.

Will the fuel system even have an effect since im just swapping the block? Also, im going to change the clutch. All the internals on engine are stock. What is a good but not very expensive clutch i can put in and get a little more power? Something better than stock.

Just use fuel system from the 97' if it all works.

This thread in post #3 is a picture of the difference in the fuel systems. Your 97 will have the "returnless" system where the fpr is located right by the fuel filter and fuel tank. The early 96's will have it on the end of the fuel rail.

SouthBend Clutches seem to be a favorite around here. Your not going to gain power with a better clutch though.

Okay thanks ill look into that. A better clutch wont give me anything at all?

Upgraded clutches have benefits, but they don't "make power." Some say that aluminum flywheels help the engine rev quicker, but it's not adding power. At some point, you might require an upgraded clutch to efficiently transfer energy from the crank to the transmission: most OEM clutches will begin to slip once the a certain power threshold is reached.

Another thing on the fuel system. Is the late 96" model the same as the 97'? Probly a dumb question but ide rather be safe than sorry. And for the clutches. Revving faster means picking up speed faster?

Okay i think i have the late 96 then. When i took my fuel rail off to use on my other eclipse, everything was the same on both. There wasnt anything attached to the fuel rail that was different.

March 96' is the year of my eclipse im taking engine from. As far as i can see, fuel rails are the same. Just one incoming line on both. As for new gaskets. What gaskets do i need to replace when i do this swap?

Doesnt matter anymore. Found out today that im deploying tomorrow. Thanks for the help though guys.

I have a 2g esi talon 5 speed and i was wondering what do i have to to do pull the 420a motor with out droping the tranny?

Unbolt the bellhousing from the block and carefully pull the block out. It's not much more involved, but there is a lot less room to work with.
