How crazy is this. (tranny)

So the past week ive been having some rattling noises coming from my tranny. Well 3 days ago i finally lost 2nd gear. So i took the tranny out and decided to open it up. When i took the first cover off i grabbed the big main bolt at the end of the shaft that the gears sit on and it was totally lose. Like i could blow on it and it would spin. The only thing from holding it on was the scrimp they put on it. I thought this was very suprising. How is it possible it could come lose.

It happens more often then you'd believe, Mitsubishi's are notorious for this, This happened in one of my other DSMs and my friends 3000gt.
