crankshaft question

i know this is gonna sound stupid, but how hard is it to check the endplay on my crankshaft....i was calling some shops cause i wanna get it checked out to see if i have crankwalk, and one place said they had to take apart the engine...

For your particular application I'm not sure. If you have a shop manual look in the section about rebuilding the engine. I'm almost positive that they will have something in their about checking endplay after the crankshaft, but I'm almost certain you are going to have to remove the tranny to do this correctly.

Basic rudimentary test....Take the belts off and remove the wheel. Grab ahold of the harmonic balancer and push and pull to see if it moves excessively...I doubt it will but without digging into your car I have no idea how else you would do this.

-There was a post in the Talon Digest a while back, but I couldn't find it now. The general ieda is mount a dial indicator on the block, have someone step on the clutch, check for play, that's all I could remember, this is done without removing the motor or the tranny.

thanks, well it seems like not a single shop in town will check it for me, so i am either gonna have to do it myself or take it to the dealer...

Actually what Turboholic said, makes alot of sense. It wouldn't take you long either, and you wouldn't even have to remove the transmission...
I can't believe I didn't think of that....then again I don't own a 2G and I've never seen crankwalk.

Dealer is going to charge a shitload if it hasn't. If it did it might be a recall issue...

To git an actual number you will have to remove the oil pan and git some feeler guages, use a prybar to move the crank back and forth how ever much or how ever little. Push it forward as much as you can and measure between the end of the block and its last counter balance. This method is barbaric but it will tell you ballpark, and enough if you are gitting crank walk. Dial indicators are more specific. Check your tolerances in your manual if you have one.

also, i was wondering about this sound coming from my engine when i start it after it has been sitting a while....at first people told me it might be the starte sticking...but after reading up on crankwalk, i think it might be the crank angle sensor...cause if that goes out, that is a sign of crankwalk also right?....would the sound it make be kinda like crunching paper or grinding metal maybe?....if so, how can i check out the sensor?....and now it also squels...kind of like when a belt is loose...so many things going wrong with my car...if anyone could help that would be great...

The CAS is one thing that will directly be affected by CRANKWALK. If you are good at mechanics and can take a look at the CAS this will show some signs. Like scraping on the plate.
