Hello dsm'ers
Just registered. Been reading and searching for months. Bought a '93 gsx to build as a road race car. Figured I was tired of seeng all the evos. Wanted a change.
That died a horrible rod bearing death soon thereafter.
Then a 92 Tsi. Scrapped the suspension, trans, T/C, brakes etc. Replaced with more track friendly equipment.
The 6bolt was supposed had been rebuild according to previous owner. Put on a new 20g, fmic, and all the goodies had had planned for the GSX.
While head was at machine shop they found a very small crack. Bye Bye. new head rebuilt with the right parts and cams. was put back on car with all the stuff and started. It ran a very nice 12 seconds before a very loud bang then nothing. Woops, mechanic forgot to put the crank bolt back on. Pulley backed of, piston into valve, you know the rest.
Motor completely torn down, forged internals from bottom up, 3rd head built. Reassembled.
Talk about an expensive procedure. I could have bought almost anything else or 2 of anything else on what I've spent on this car.
So far, ont the first tune it did 398awhp. Its not yet been back for a second tune as I'm tyring to get some seat time in it and break it in, or have it not break down. Its supposed to be tuned again Thursday if it holds together. We'll see what happens.
The set up on paper should provide me with a very solid road racing platform. Its probably never going to see a1/4 track but the mid-power is very impressive.
I want to give the ppl at MAperformance kudos. They have helped me out a ton from a parts standpoint. I cant tell you how many calls I've made at 6:30 for parts that I needed the next day and they were always there on time. A couple times they stayed late to make sure the parts were given to the UPS driver.
I'm not exactly sure what made me think to make a track car out of a DSM but I think it was because when I was younger I was always impressed with them.
I've had a lot of fun building the car each time. One day it may actually see the light of the track.
Anyway thanks to the site for giving me tons of usefull info while building. I've picked up a ton of stuff. I'm sure to be in need of advice as I progress.
