Ok so my turbo recently decided to take a poop on me. Stock turbo, 97 gst. Well not totally but the fins are all chewed up and there is all kinds of shaft play. So I know its time for a new one. I need a little help choosing the right size and brand. I am pretty sure I am gonna get a Mitsubishi turbo. Actually I am pretty sure I am gonna get an evo III big 16g. Mine is still stock and I don't have many mods on my car. Just the basics, intake, exhaust, plugs wires, timer, guages, blowoff...etc. I'm not looking to upgrade everything on my car anymore but I feel like it would be a waste to get a small 16g for the same price. Ya know? So is this a good choice? Should I look at used ones?? Appreciate the help.

OH AND I HAVE ANOTHER QUESTION. CAN I DRIVE MY CAR WHEN THE SHAFT IS LOOSE AND HITTING THE HOUSING OR IS THAT DANGEROUS???

Link.

thats a very good choice as most people on here will tell you. I would also consider a Big T-28 as well due to it being a direct bolt on affair with near identical potential as the E316g

??? Why. You don't have the mods to even come CLOSE to pushing a small 16g? What is your horsepower goal?

I don't have a horsepower goal. Like I said I am past the point of wanting to max out my power. I don't even care if I upgrade the turbo to a larger one at all. I just need to replace it. I guess I will look for a something smaller. I don't want to blow up my car. What do you suggest and where is a good place to get a smaller turbo like a t25 or t28?

You can buy a T2x series nearly anywhere, but for what you'll pay for it (especially if it's a GT series) it's not worth it in my opinion. I suggest that you just browse the classifieds for a while, ask around, and get a feel for what a used stock T25 is worth. Then peruse classifieds here and local DSM sites, offer a decent price, and hope to get one for a steal.

Your current turbo will work for now, but depending on how thorough the damage is, it may go sooner than later. This will give you time to shop around and get a good deal. Don't pay too much for a stock unit with lots of miles on it, and be wary of high mileage turbos (be careful they come from a good home).

Good luck!

I would buy a 16g. I dont see why not really. You can buy used one, with everything to make it fit your car for under $400 or so. Just search the classifieds. If not atleast a 14b. You dont even need a "horsepower" goal really. You just want a replacement, and these would atleast make your car a little more fun to drive.

If this is the case for you then the suggestion to upgrade to a 14b is a good one here. The stock fuel system can tolerate stock 14b boostlevels just fine and you will still notice a nice increase in power especially up top. a used 14bs very affordable even with buying the jpipe lower intrcooler pipe changes and water/oil lines. Usually there's a few who's sell it all.

Ok thanks for all the input guys. The 14b sounds like the right way to go. If anyone sees any decent setups let me know. I appreciate all the help.

well i made 300+hp on a 14b, 371hp on a small 16g and 445hp on a 18g sl2. max out a 14b
before you get anything bigger.
