How bad is the damage on my B16G?

My B16G got knocked over when the housings were off for cleaning/porting. A very tiny piece of a fin got chipped, just wondering how big of an issue is this? Will it need balanced? Whole new wheel? Thanks

that shouldn't cause any harm for efficency because its on the discharge side, but I would take a grinder to the fin on the opposite side, as long as you take off the same on both sides you should be fine for balance. I have seen bigger chunks than that on a 14b and it seemed to balance fine.

I wouldn't attempt to rebalance that, you could make it worse. Actually, you might be able to send it out and get it clipped.

Personally, I would run it. However, I'm running a 14b that had an exhaust valve pass through it and chew up all of the blades unevenly.

The other option, is to get a whole new wheel/shaft assembly. If I remember right, the way they are balanced, if you're careful, you can just pop the new one on. Maybe someone around here has a cheap B16G whose turbine is fine but everything else is screwed.

Little chips like that are a heck of a lot better than bent fins... I trashed my 14b because I sucked up a bit of rubber coupler into it and bent several fins. It shot the bearings from being out of balance. You should be fine. You will know if very quickly if it is going to be a problem. You will hear it.

Run it. Turbos have came to my shop completely missing fins on the compressor and the owner didn't even know until the turbo was taken off the car. So how important is balance, really?

That chip is very, very minor.

I've destroyed thrust bearings by not having the assembly balanced after swapping wheels. Is there something I'm missing? I'd really like to save the shipping and balancing costs. . .

I vote to get it clipped :thumb:
