Is my PTE 5031bb going?

I'm not able to watch the video while at work and I don't have any specs for the turbo but just to give you a quick answer, up and down/ side to side freeplay is normal as long as the wheel isn't hitting the housing. In and out freeplay is bad. I'm sure others can elaborate on this more but its something for you to check out.

Ball bearing turbos have shaft play just as stated above. Even a little in and out is normal. If the blades don't touch the housing you're good. I think the things to worry about with bb turbos are smoke from too much oil and a grinding sound from too little oil. Also, a whining sound from insufficient cooling. I think you're safe though.

LOL funny how I literally was thinking about the same thing. concidence?

we both got ours around the same time, same vendor (if i remember correctly), I was just thinking my turbo was blown, and I was just thinking how f-ed I was because 1 year has passed LOL

Anyway, are you feeding your BB from the OFH or head? do you have a micro filter? How does your oil return line look? Are you blowing smoke?

a little shaft play is normal. my BB started that way and hasn't really changed too much within 6k miles. Also pull your LICP (right off the comp housing) and verify there is no oil in there. I about shit my pants the other day when I pulled it off, but my turbo is ok :rocks:

I noticed quite a bit of shaft play in the turbo compared to my other 50 trim (agp) maybe cause its BB, i dont know. video is kinda of shitty, maybe i should make a new one.Sucks i checked the papers and it was a year 5/2 so i might be screwed.

Here's the video:

Sorry this is probably too late, but thought I'd throw in.

When I first got mine, I was worried from the shaft play it had. Apparently though that's only because it was out of the car..once you get it hooked up & get the oil pressure going through it, there won't be any. Dunno if that's on all turbos or just BB turbos since this is the only turbo I've had besides the T25, but yeah..

Sorry I can't see the video cause I'm at work, so I dunno if you're having the play in or out of the engine bay.

With a std. thrust bearing side to side play is normal & will be taken up by oil presure but in/out play isn't normal & indicated a shot/on its way out turbo. For ball bearing, they appear to have abit of play. Actually when I first got my FP3052 I was a little concerned with how much play it had as I was use to std thrust bearings & their play but had heard somewhere that BB didn't have this. When I contacted FP I was told this is completely & lots are surprised by how much play BB turbos actually have. I can't remember 100% but I think it may have even have abit of in/out play as well. If your not having any of the symptoms mentioned above, I wouldn't worry about it as long as you have a good/proper oil supply & coolent supply.
