rebuilding 91 tsi(motor)...turbo is bad I think(shaft wiggles)...tsi is an auto tranny,I have a 92 laser RS with a 5 speed,can I swap turbos?I heard that auto's have a smaller turbo?its just a daily driver and everything is stock:thumb:

Yes, the auto-equipped G1s have smaller turbochargers, as well as smaller injectors. One redeeming quality though, is the higher fuel pressure with the auto versus manual [6.5psi over M/T cars].

On my car [all-stock '92 GSX auto, with a small-16G], I should keep it under 7psi to prevent a lean-run condition. Whether or not that's truly the case, we'll see.

Just keep in mind - stock boost on a stock turbo is fine, but stock boost in a larger turbo equals more flow, and more flow without a fuel increase can equal nasty results.

I can't say anything from a tuning aspect, as I'm still doing my homework in that department for my own setup. I'd err on the side of safety, and turn the boost down, even if just a couple pounds. Datalog everything, if you can, and go from there for the best answer.

The turbo might not be blown depending on how much the shaft has play. In and out play is bad, you do not want that, but side to side and up and down is allowable, if it is within the guidelines. It should be closer to none.
