How bad is this bent fin?

This is how said turbo came from said company out of the box. It didnt look like a shipping problem of any kind and I can see a little mark on the lower one but not sure if that would have anything to do with it. Im having a slight problem getting them to call me back but I thought Id get your guys' opinion on it.

Hmm....that looks bent to me. I can't imagine that any of the fins should be bent. If you can return it....do it. If you can't return it then just rebend the fin with some needle nose. Not a big deal.

I am sure it would run, so long as the wheel spins freely. But since you bought it new, I would definitely have them replace it.

Not a big deal?? ROFL This guy just shelled out some serious cash for a brand new turbo and he gets this??? "Just rebend the fin with some needle nose." WTF Come on now, do you realize that these compressor wheels spin in excess of 100,000rpms? Do you realize that the slightest vibration due to an unbalanced wheel will destroy this turbo in a matter of time??

Devilsperm, call the company and explain to one of their techs what exactly is wrong with it. If it were a descent company they would return it just to have your business in the future. Don't run it, dont bend the fin back, as that can create a stress point on that fin. You paid big money for this turbo, you should expect big results in the end. Not a turbo that is gonna kick the bucket in month.

I just got off the phone with them. I dont have any worries about the company I bought it from. Im confident they will treat me right on this, especially since I just gave them $2600. I had to send them some pictures and he said Ill pobably have to send it back for a new CHRA. I just hope the turn around time is quick :)

Out of curiosity were other items packaged in the same box with the turbo?
Hope everythign goes well, that thing looks sweet :D :dsm:

Yes actually. When the UPS lady dropped it off I said to her "Just one box?" I was surprised it was in the same box with my manifold and o2 housing flying around in there. Hopefully I can get it back soon so I can get everything re-tuned. Id like to see a mid 11 this year at least sometime. The 14b is getting just a little bit tired :)

Well I got the turbo back today and they straightened the fin. WTF A phone call was made and he said it would be fine and not be off balance. I guess time will tell. Typically when you spend $1400 on one item, you expect it to be in pretty good shape, at least I would expect it to be.

So, just out of curiousity, which turbo is this? How much was it? Who did you buy it from.

Really makes me shy of purchasing anything fragile/expensive online. Even if I had to pay a little more to get it locally...

So after all this time all they ended up doing was bending the fin back w/ a pair on pliers?

If that's what they did and that was my turbo, I would definitely be getting a refund and going elsewhere.

From the mark thats on the lower blade, looks like something was dropped in there. I would defently be sending it back. BTW what turbo is it?

That looks like a FP3065 if I've ever seen one. Judging by the vents in the housing.

I don't think we can expect him to confirm that though, since it would be classified as vendor bashing. I'm just stating my opinion on the model of the turbo.

yep. They reassured me that it would be fine and if they thought there would be a problem, they wouldnt have sent it back like this. I, however, have a different thought. Obviously that one fin is going to be cutting the air different and causing turbulance, how this wont cause it to wobble is beyond me.

I know most of the turbo builders have a machine to measure/correct imbalance, so would hope this was done after the fix. But if it was me that spent $1,400 on a turbo, I'd demand a new one. At a minimum, would expect a partial refund/credit of some sort and a warranty on the repairs.

To put in a different perspective, If you bought a brand new car and was delivered with a dent in the side would you settle for the dealorship banging out the dent and repainting for the same price?

I know it would be easy to bash the shop given the circumstances, but adhearing to the rules (as you have) under the circumstances shows strength and get's my respect :thumb: :dsm:

I agree, but I would just go over to http://vendors-reviewed.com/ and make a post there regarding the situation.

I think you'd be doing the dsm community a favor by explaining the situation, so that in the future people can avoid this kind of problem by not buying from that particular vendor.

yeah, but if it is fp, he would be taking on one of the biggest names in turbos for dsms. FP has an amazing reputation which won't be brought down by someone like Brian. Some people will listen, but in a couple months, everyone will forget and be back to normal. None of us can really do a lot of harm to a HUGE company with such a good name to them because people simply won't listen to one case.

Which brings up another fact. If this is a one case senario, people will just say, it won't happen to me, this doesn't apply to me. Its always, I can't get in an accident, that only happens to bad drivers. (then she crashes her 80,000 dollar merc'er into someone making a protected left turn... RIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHTTTTTTT.)

What about that huge chunk taken out of the nut that holds the wheel to the shaft?? I don't think it would take 100k+ rpm without imbalance.

That's how they balance the turbo shaft. They remove the excess weight on that part of the shaft to make it balanced. Just like they do at a tire shop, they add weights to your rim and tires to balance them....well here they just drill to remove that excess weight.

If a shop bends a wheel with a pair of pliers and says it's good to go, it doesn't seem like people are going to forget that, regardless if it's FP, PTE, Bullseye, SBR, or whoever. It's not about hurting the shop, it's about protecting the consumers. To the people that actually care about these sort of things, they would remember this and won't go to that shop. I've had very bad luck with buying new turbo's, and I won't buy another turbo from any vendor/manufacturer until I'm 100% positive I'm getting a quality product. So getting to the bottom of things like this are important to me.

That turbo should be fine, I've seen much worse run reliably. If indeed it was FP I can personally guarantee you that you're not going to have a problem with their customer service down the road. Earlier this year my car experienced some sort of issue with the new 18g I purchased from them last year. After shipping it back to them and a couple of phone calls I had a new 18g in my hands ready to run and have had no more issues with it since that time. Should you have any issues down the road this purchase/return/repair incident will be on your customer file and I'm sure they'll take it into consideration.
