Ok I Just Bought A 96 Gst... I Use To Own A 90 Awd Tsi... Now When I Bought It It Was Smokeing. Like The Seals Were Bad On The Turbo... I Went To Change It With The 14-b That I Have And Im Missing The Outlet Part Of My Turbo. So..... I Noticed Today That It Started Running Hot Like My 1990 Did When Tht Turbo Seals Were Bad. But Its Also Sputtering. Looking For Any Advise On What To Check Out... I Bought A Gasket Kit For The Car And Im Awaiting My Rebuild Kit But I Need To Get To Work( I Live In The Virgin Islands And It Takes A Minimum Of 2 Weeks For Anything To Get Here) Would The Turbo Seals Being Bad Make It Act Like This Or Is It Something Else.. Also It Only Sputters When Im About To Boost And Then Stops At Higher Rpms.... And I Checked For Boost Leaks And Nadda Cept By The Compressor Side Of The Turbo( I Think) Any Help Will Be Greatly Apreciated..

It could be the turbo but doesn't have to be, how did you conclude it was the turbo before you pulled it?

A blown turbo will not over heat your car, if that's what you meant by "hot". If the engine is over heating, could be a different problem.

Also It Only Sputters When Im About To Boost And Then Stops At Higher Rpms.... And I Checked For Boost Leaks And Nadda Cept By The Compressor Side Of The Turbo( I Think)

Typical symptoms of a boost leak, perform a REAL boost leak test before anymore test runs so you don't blow this turbo as well. http://www.vfaq.com/mods/ICtester.html

Ok I Figured It Was The Turbo Cause There Was Oil Leaking From The Houseing And There Was A Lil Oil In The Intake Tubes And Manifold. The Cars Running Hot Probly Cause It Needs A New T-stat But Its Fine Till I Start To Spool Then The Temp Starts To Climb A Lil. I Know About The Real Boost Leak Test But In The Move From Las Vegas To St.thomas Virgin Islands I Had To Leave Some Things Behind(air Tools And Just Tools Period) So Ill Just Go By K-mart Here And Pick Up A Tank And Try That. I Have My 14-b From My 90 Talon But I Need To Get The J Pipe Or Whatever Its Called Or Make One. Also Ive Been Told That The 14-b Bolts Directly To The 2nd Gens But Ive Also Hered That It Takes Some Modifying. I Could Use Some Advise On That Too. Also Keep In Mind That Here In The Islands I Dont Have Access To Autozone Or Anything Like That. All I Have Is Napa And There Is No Performance Places Here. So I Either Have To Buy Everything Online Or I Have To Make It. Thanx For Any Help You Guys Give Me It Is Greatly Apreciated.
 
ok i found out that the vacume hose that goes from the bpv to the intake manifold isnt connected or should i say the nossle on the bpv is broken..... so im goin to try and find one to replace that. this weekend im goin to get a compression tester so i can do a test on that. the engine right now has 128,000 on it and i do have a spare block but i wanted to build that one slowly and rebuild the current one to make it last longer( due to it takeing so long for parts to get here). i dont want huge #s from this car right now... all i want is for it to run normally and be able to use the 14-b that i have. if anyone has parts that i can purchase or knows any little secrets about finding out if codes are being thrown please let me know. and the weird thing now is the car stoped smokeing???? it stoped blowing the white smoke and now just puffs a lil after i rev it... anyone have input on that??? thanks again to everyone that helps me out with these things.

The oil in turbo and ic can come from the valve cover breather, the oil in the intake can come from either pcv or egr, however they don't have to be. Was the car doing the same thing when you thought the old was bad?

No, you need the 2g install kit. Any turbo vendors should carry them.

Do that ASAP, I think it's the or a big part of your problem.

This is a big problem. Not only this is a big leak, if the bov was not blowing off properly it can kill your turbo. Do you hear fluttering noise when you let off? Don't drive the car before you replace the bov or at least disconnect the actuator arm from the wastegate.

this weekend im goin to get a compression tester so i can do a test on that.

The more test, the more info, the better.

You have never mentioned smoke up until now, :mad: Definitely do that compression test.

Over all I would say that compression test and boost leak test will either solve your problem or give a good indication of what direction to take next. Another words, DON'T POST BACK AGAIN UNTIL YOU HAVE PERFORMED BOTH TESTS. :) BTW I've noticed you stopped caping every word, fingers getting tired? ;)
 
well i found another vacume leak on the intake manifold... i think its the one that goes to the fuel presure regulator. i got a vacume diagram from the taboo site and im goin to check that out also. the turbo did flutter and still does since i still have the old one on it. i havent been drivieng it since all this has happend. instead im drivieng my gf's 88 toyota pick up that looks like it has been rolled off a cliff a few times( scary!! ) thanx for the help
oldman glad that i can get some info.. im not totally lost in all this im just not sure and need opinions. i use to have an 89 probe gt and that was baisically the first turbo car i rebuilt and wrenched on. then moved to the 90 awd talon. but ill post resuts after compresion test on saturday. thanx again
 
LOLz!! i have no idea how every other word got caped... verry interesting though... oh and the 2g install kit.... i dont have a turbo perfomance place here so i have to order online or have someone pick it up for min the states and mail it to me.. so..... what does it consist of and what do i need. right now i have the full 14-b.. houseing and all. even the o2 houseing and everything. im going to use the 2g manifold so i think the only things i might need is the j pipe and the oil lines>???

I believe you're right but I'm not 100% sure because I have a 1g, someone else would have to chip in on that one. You can also call the vendors and ask them.
 
ok heres the scoop.... i checked every vacume line through out the car and i came up with 2 more lines that were leaking/missing. so i replaced them and i was able to fix the bpv temporily just for a test. that did make a diff in the sound of the turbo. it wasnt makeing a fluttering noise anymore. but..... now im getting a delay in acceleration like its missfireing . i pulled the plugs and they were fouled from the oil being burnt from the turbo. its still fluttering but only when i get to the point where the turbo is spooling. other then that it idles fine, no oil in the water, no water in the oil no more vacume leaks. also i did notice that it has an after market maf or mas. im wondering if maybe they hacked it or something and the car isnt getting the right amount of air that the mas/maf is telling the ecu. i noticed on the parts catalog theres a gm mas/maf for sale there.... if i picked up the gm mas/maf would everything be about the same as the stock 2g? and what car would i have to pick it up from? i tried to pick up a compression gauge to test the compression and well... non existant on st. thomas. still at a loss on what more to do. i still think its the seals on the turbo but im not sure and i wont be for about 2 weeks when the 14-b/16-g install kit gets here. anything else i can check??

I am new to dsm's so I will try to help from what I have read. I think that you would also need a maf translater if you get the GM MAF. If you need to get a new MAS just get one from a 96 GST and it should hook right up.
 
THANX ALOT BIGGINZ! i wish i was still in the states. i dont have the time nor the $ to try a bunch of things cause i have to have all my parts shiped to me through international shipping. well i guess i can call a few people in florida and see what they can work out for me. i miss vegas so much at this point. i actually tink im the only person on this board thats in st.thomas or in any of the virgin islands. wish i atleast had someone here to point some things out. maybe ill take some pix tonight and some vid/sound clips so you can hear what it sounds like.
 
Just making sure you did a REAL boost leak test, sound more like you did a visual inspection.
 
yeah i did a real test... finally! i bought a lil air tank from home depot for 44.00 and notta. i do have something at the houseing of the turbo where i saw oil before. also i believe thats where the seals have gone. just waiting now for my 2g install kit and to change the turbo. i guess im goin to have to order a new maf/mas too. does this sound right to everyone. i dont want to go putting parts into my car that might cause problems down the road or make it perform like shit right now.
 
ok next week im goin to put in my 14-b and if i can find one a new 2g maf. also im goin to change the plugs and everything and check my tps,fuel filter and everyting surrounding fuel and air. i have it right now idleing like a dream and what not but i still get this little hessitation or miss when i first stomp on the gas. it stops once i have the engine reveing a lil but when driveing it does it when the trubo is about to spool. getting closer though 1 step/day at a time. anyone else have any other ideas for me?
 
I think that with oldman's help (he's pretty sharp isn't he?) you've managed to track down the major items. I think what you're getting now is a symptom of spark more than anything else. Misses under load are often caused by the plugs starting to go bad. Get a fresh set in there and make sure they're gapped correctly (.028) so that you don't blow out the spark under boost.

thanx alot andy... i guess ill check that first. i was always told start with the simplest things first. its just been a while since ive even been behind the wheel of a car let alone worked on one. i ordered the 2g install kit from sbr since i noticed that everyone else used it and had great results. im goin to change the plugs and wires tonight and hope that fixes it missing and what not. if not i guess im goin to be getting a new volt meter and testing every electrical sensor in this bad boy. im just glad that its not anything major. thanx again guys for helping me out and beign patient with me. i learned alot more that way.

dont wory oldman.... my talon was on jack stands for about a year and a half before i finished it. i used ngk's in my talon before but if they dont have them here what is another suggestion for plugs and or wires?

I use NGK plugs and wires. I remember reading a thread about wires and that the MSD is the one to get. You should just get them at sbr since you have a shipment coming in.

I Might Have To Have It Shiped To My Parents House In Vegas And Have Them Ship It To Me Here In St.thomas. I Wish I Could Open A Performance Store Here. I Would Have The Only One On The Island. rofl! i have no idea how every word is getting caped! one thing i do know is that my work computer is a POS and has a mind of its own most of the time. anyways.... i have no idea whats involved in shipping except it has to be shiped at a international shipping rate cause they dont think the US VIRGIN ISLANDS is a us teritory. even when i have a zip code and we are the US VIRGIN ISLANDS. its cheaper to ship to puerto rico then it is to ship here. but i dont understand the 100 dollars though. thats alot! ive just about had enough of the soon come stuff here. im about to move back to the states where i can buy oil and everything at the gas station and i can get parts for my car from almost anywhere. its really frustrateing! im goin to go to home depot tonight and see if i can find something to make my j-pipe and go to a hydrolic hose place and see if they can make my feed line. i called a few of them and they said no. but i think if i go up to them then they might do it. and yes i said home depot! thats the only store we really have here and theres only one and it sux!
