I started this thread for the same reason as the other I have. I am looking to see who has what intake and what they have encountered (IE performance/ smog - law enforcement issues). I know that there are many options out there and buying an injen intake for the carb number sucks for the price when you can get a K&N filter and an FP intake for a better price and performance.

Please state your experiences and feed back on what you have done. Thanks for participating.:thumb:

The intakes i have came with the cars, and looked like they were made just copying other designs, but they both work fine for me. 3 inch diameter.

Thanks for the input so far. If you can, try to include how your smog test went or if you were inspected for what ever reason. Keep them coming.

Stock 1G intake and MAS with a K&N held on with sheet metal screws, airbox delete. Smog guys haven't batted an eye.

eBay hard pipe, direct pirate off the Injen. I believe the Injen is the only one to have a CARB sticker, and that applies only to the Eclipse. Apparently nothing is CARB-approved for the Talons. Bureaucratic brilliance at its utmost.

Thanks for the reply Defiant. What I am trying to find out is, is there any way to get a real performance intake and still be able to get by the smog test and random inspections?

Like you mentioned above, the Injen Intake is the only hard pipe and filter mod that comes with a c.a.r.b. sticker and that only applies the the eclipse and I believe that is on for the 1995-1999 years. So, pretty much all the other years and makes are limited to the c.a.r.b certified air filters only.

What I am trying to do is find out who uses a different set up and is still able to go through all the hoops without any issues. I know from experience that this depends on your region/area in california.

If you remember back to the thread that discussed the legality of the intercooler upgrade in california, we found that it was indeed legal to change it as long as the came came turbocharged from the factory and also already had an intercooler(please correct me if this is wrong). But, earlier in that thread we discussed the same situation. Like the greddy 18r intercooler was one of the only ones with a c.a.r.b. sticker and it was limited to the vehicle model(eclipse) as well.

Edit: Here is the thread I was talking about - http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/showthread.php?t=254459

HKS Super Mega.. It's supposed to have a carb#, but i got it from a friend and he didn't have the sticker, so I just switch it to stock for smog check.

I've got something that looks like a k&n that was in the car when I bought it. I've never had a prob with the vis when doing the smog check....

Ok, here is another question for you guys. If you had the money, what intake setup would you get? Now, keep in mind that you need to pass the visual inspection and not have to worry much about getting hassled by law enforcement. Just to get your minds going, here are a few ideas: FP intake pipe, dejon tool intake with all nipples for the factory hoses, Injen intake, ebay intake, etc.

It was suggested to me before that I get a FP intake pipe and put a K&N sticker on it. I would need to buy a new filter to pull that idea off (because I lost my old c.a.r.b sticker) but, I really don't think that would work out too well for me and the whole test dummy idea isn't too smart for me to do right now.

Dejon intake and intercooler pipes, GReddy fmic, and K&N filter. Smogged it last month and the tech didn't even bat an eye. :thumb:

Just out of curiosity, what color are your pipes? I guess woodland hills is pretty laid back or they are used to testing high end cars that look like that from the factory.

I almost got a job over there working for the speed gallery.

If you're concerned about a hood-pop, just run the K&N (or, anyone else's) drop-in, high-flow filter, and leave off the sticker. It's not worth enough power to give a crap about.

dejon 3.5" intake pipe with custom cold air intake routed to smic location (i have short route ic pipng) with K&N FPIK sticker on MAF, tell smog tech its for the ENTIRE, intake system including the ic pipes :)

Hey Defiant, could you elaborate a little more on what you mean? I understand using the K&N air filter (the CARB approved kit) but, are you saying just to run the stock intake or use what ever intake pipe we want?

If you're in a tough enough community that the cops make you open the hood, then don't risk it. Just run the stock intake with an after-market filter element. Even if you do have a CARB-approved intake, if a dumb cop tows your car, you still have the time and damage to deal with regardless who winds up paying for it. The "performance" payoff you get from a hard intake just isn't worth the bother in California.

Thanks for clarifying that for me Defiant. I understand what you mean. I see that a cop can tow your car or site you, if he feels that you are involved in street racing or trying to cover something up. I can understand both sides on this one.

I know in certain areas it is not that heavily enforced compared to san diego, the inland empire or some parts of LA county. Luckily in my area it isn't so bad.
