Quick question, would the cat have to be in the same location as stock if I wanted to put one on? Its more for visual than emissions, I already bought a megan downpipe and since I'm getting piping made from there back to a muffler, I thought why not get a cat put in there so I don't have to get the megan pipe hacked up. Either that or pull off a cat shell from a junk yard and bolt it on over the megan pipe so it looks semi decent. What y'all think? Anybody gotten hassled a lot for no cat? I never did on my other car, even with a shiny greddy muffler, but it was a toyota solara so maybe wasn't as conspicuous.

1. yes it will go in the stock location
2. yes you can weld a cat cover onto a cat-less downpipe, but in SoCal that's not the wisest of moves for obvious reasons
3. thread goes in Newbie section, not SoCal section :thumb:

Sorry about posting the thread in the wrong forum, I figured I'd ask everyone here since we're all in the same region. Anybody have regular meets? I'd be willing to drive down from Santa Barbara to meet a few other guys.

Yeah I think your thread should change from what it is to...Is it wise to not run a cat in Cali...
Sorry bud....

They're lifting emissions in Colorado Springs and i'll probably go catless....

Haha, its definitely not wise to run catless in California unless you've got some sort of muscle car... otherwise turbo'ed 4 bangers are out of luck.

i don't think if you move it from stock location it would be a big deal, i mean it still would do the same job in both place, but you have to put the 02 sensor behind it still, witch might delay signal to the ECU since its more wire, car might run a little richer or leaner. but thats my theory. could run just fine.

Cool cool, see I don't really care if the o2 throws a cel or not, I could clear it with the logger if need be. I just didn't want to get hassled from cops because its not in the "correct" location, I just want to get a cat in the rare occasion I get pulled over and the cop wants to check under my car. And if it's after the downpipe, its easier to make since its just two flanges on to each end of the cat. Truth be told, I'd like to know how likely it is to get checked for no cat around the Southern California area. The most I ever cruise is from Santa Barbara, down 101 and 405 to 5, then around the San Diego area. Feel free to PM me if that's better than posting publicly, I could see how some people might like to keep that fact a secret.

i think it mostly depends on the cop and the DB on your exhaust. if you sound loud as shit of course there gonna pull you over and start checking under the hood, but if its nice and quite it less likly to catch the eye of the cop. then theres the dick head cop who pull you over ### he knows you have a non OEM muffler and shit hits the fan

This is why I'm going to get a dual-tip Magnaflow endpiece fabbed up when I have a chance.. looks a little more OEM, less likely to catch a cop's attention. They can tell that *some* car is pretty loud, but they can't figure out which one.

On a similar note, this year is test-only for me.. anyone know of a 'good' smog shop in the Burbank/LA area?

A cat is a cat. How would a cop know what the "correct" location is? If the o2 throws a cel, make an o2 sensor simulator, I made one last month, total cost was less than $15.

Instead of making flanges for a cat, you could just take the downpipe off, get a 3" cat (if your downpipe is 3") and have an exhaust shop weld the cat in the downpipe. That way you don't have any flanges to worry about and if you paint it all in high temp (VHT 2000), it would look like a one piece unit.

I've been catless for 2 years, my DSM isn't loud at all...unless I go WOT
