Ok, this has been a very bad day. My girlfriend broke up with me this afternoon, I'm out at the ABC store picking up some requisitions to help the evening go a little smoother, and on the way back - I stop at a light, and my clutch doesn't come back up.

I pump it a few times and it goes fine, I stop at the supermarket to pick up a few last things, and I smell something odd inside the car--- i look underneath, everything looks ok, no leaking, no smoking or anything.... So I go inside and do my business.

I come out, get in the car, start her up, and I can't shift gears. Everytime I depress the clutch (Its an ACT2600), the revs dip about 300rpms at idle. It takes me about 3 minutes to finally get the car into reverse without grinding, and I put it in first, start to go, and about 30 feet later I try to depress the clutch again and go into 2nd. As I depress the clutch, I feel and hear a grinding noise unlike anything I've ever heard before. I'm eventually able to limp home in first, but even now in neutral, I can hear the grinding when I depress the clutch.

I'm thinking either I blew out my clutch, or the master and/or slave cylinders. What else could it be... PLEASE HELP!!

Sounds like a leak in your hydralic line. It could be so small you won't see it unless someone is pumping your clutch while you watch the lines. Check the rubber line that connects your hard line that runs to the resevoir to the hard line that connects to your slave cylinder. That is your weak link.

i had a similar problem with mine, first check you clutch fluid level. If it is empty then you know you have a leak. Mine was a small one in the slave, it dripped right on the downpipe and burned away clean all the evidence. Lucky for me leak stop fixed the problem. Although I didn't experience a dip in the idle.

I had a problem once where one of the springs fell out of the clutch disk because of a stress fracture. It became wedged between the pressure plate and the clutch disk. My RPM would dip down when I pressed the clutch, and I could not put it in gear. If all of your fluid levels are fine and you can find no leaks, you will probably have to take out the transmision and check the clutch disk. Hope this helps

Oh yeah, almost forgot
that grinding noise may indicate a throw out bearing gone terrible bad. The heavier aftermarket clutches can be a little hard on them.
That's all I can think of.
Good Luck
Don't you just Love/Hate these cars?

Well, I gave it a look today, and the master & slave cylinders seem to be fine, and I'm not losing any fluid anywhere - so the problem seems to be with the Throw Out Bearing or the Clutch. I'm gonna take it to the shop across the street to get a 2nd opinion and a definitive opinion on what's wrong, and then I'll probably need to start buying parts....

That's what I'm really hoping for... But is getting it apart myself hard? I've read over the VFAQ on clutch replacement, as well as the Chilton's guide and the Shop Manual, but I've never dropped my tranny before, so I'm just wondering how hard it is.
