the 2G steering wheels is too big, and its gettin annoying.
I want to swap it out for a smaller but I wont to have my airbag still.
I my has a 2000 VW jetta, that a pretty small wheel and still have an airbag. I was thinking about swapping it with one of those.
anyone else done a swap like this? or anything I should know before going about with the swap?

I got a momo wheel. It's really comfortable. I thought it was illegal, but I went thru 2 traffic stops, and they looked in at my harnesses and my wheel. They just said. That looks good. Have a nice night. :) I'd rather grip the wheel and take my chances than to have my arms slammed back in my face by 200mph of force from the bag. Airbags should be optional. Some people have to sit close. It can kill them. I just don't like them after seeing what happened to several friends and even my gf. Her bag knocked sunglasses off, scuffed her arms up, sent glass flying even worse, etc when she got T'd. Another girl she knows flipped a saturn and the bags didn't even deploy. They aren't very accurate it seems to me. Sometimes they come out, other times they don't, often in the same types of accidents from what I've seen. I just don't trust something that dangerous and inconsistent to save my life.

Yeah, I just got a Sparco wheel. It cost me 200 with adapter hub. It looks really good though. I have a sparco harness in my car. When you strap into that thing, your not going ANYWHERE. You can't even lean forward to change the radio. You deffinatly don't need an airbag if you have a racing harness.

Momo makes a couple of stearing wheels that have airbags in them. All you do is buy an adapter to fit it to your car. That sounds kida like what you are looking for.

By the way check out my air bag.

well so you know 1G and 3G steering wheels will fit on our cars. There have been a few people over at 2GNT who have successfully done the swap

Oh and I like your interior man, the momo wheel fits well. It looks like my interior except all your carbon fiber is brushed aluminum in mine.

on the subject of steering wheels last month i drove my buddy's montero sport '00 to denver and the stering wheel is smaller and nicer and has an airbag
will it be difficult to put it on an eclipse

why not just get a 1g steering wheel? they are very nice. they don't have the airbag, but just has everyone has pointed out, wear your seat belt or get a harness.

not sure about momo...my brother has an rx7 with a maybe 10 year old one, and its flaking up like a bi***.

on the plus side, its like 15 inches diameter and is really quite comfortable.

edit: was watching some discovery channel car show, and this exact wheel is apparently stock on the ferrari f40.

Isn't it illegal to remove a factory installed airbag steering wheel? I love to get a sparco or a isotta wheel but I don't want to get fined. Also what about insurance companies denying a claim cause you removed the airbag? Anybody know?

I was thinking about a detachable steering wheel also that could be a good security system. you park at nite and take the steering wheel in the house with you

Where is a good place to buy a steering wheel like that one. I like the quick release feature given that my car is going to be parked most of the time (only used on weekends for the track and such).

I just bought a 90 TSI and I am totally restoring it (Wheel is one of the items on my list).

Has anybody figured out how to wire up the horn from an aftermarket wheel without rigging up a striker or destroying the stock wheel?

Huh? You just connect the wire.

most aftermarket wheels come with a horn button. You just hook up that button. if you don't have a button you can buy one.

just my 2 cents.

the problem wth after markets steering wheels is that thet do not crumple or collapse as the stock one is designed to. when in an accident the seat belts do not stop but rather slow your body down when the vehicle comes to a complete stop. the Air bag is there to help "cushion" the impact and the burn that you get when the air bag deploys is not only a friction burn but also a chemical burn. when your car travels at lets say 65mph and then comes to a complete stop your body is still traveling at 65mph. the seat belt helps slow down your body by making you one with the car. as you go forward the air bag will deploy if it is a hard impact you will hit the steering wheel. when you hot the steering wheel it will collapse because the whole steering column is designed to do so along with the steering wheel.

I would keep the Stock steering wheel with the stock air bag and wear my seat belt 100% of the time when operating the vehicle.

A few cuts, bruises or burns is better than a smashed face.

Wear your seat belt today so you can enjoy your life tomorrow!

Can anyone confirm the spline count is the same on 1G and 2G? read a couple pf posts saying 1G ones fit 2Gs.
