Before you guys jump on me for what sounds like a very stupid question, look at my facts. I have a 98 stock GSX already. I know that the EVO from the factory is way better but it looks like the things that are actually better will be replaced any way no matter the car. Examples:

1. better brakes. Will be replaced anyways for 13 inch 4 pistons.
2. better bottom end. The Evo III has the 6 bolt but I will have to take it anyways and install one that can handle 450 HP for at least 45 minutes, 10 times a year.
3. better tranny. Will be replaced anyways for shepheard (I know I is mispelled)
4. Better handling from the Factory. Still not enough for road racing and the entire suspension will be replaced for a real road racing suspension.
5. FMIC from the factory. Will be replaced any ways for a better, bigger one.
6. Cooling. Will be replaced anyways for a Fluidyne, Fal fans and twin Ztrap oil collers..
7. Weight. Both car would be stripped out.

I know I am missing other things but I just wanted to make my point that every part that makes the the EVO III better are not good enough for Road Racing and will be replaced anyways(I used this word a lot I can see).

If I was in the market for a car I would pick the EVO III (lots of them here in Panama) but I already have the 98 GSX.

So what do you guys think, I´m I right or am I missing something and should sell the GSX and get the EVO?

Are you talking evo 8 or evo 3? If it was an evo 8 Id say go the evo 8, but the evo 3 was basically an updated, lightened, and faster GVR-4, so I would say stick with your gsx. Also your gsx has a better drag co-efficient, and im not sure how stiff the evo 3 chassis is, but usually the evos have a stiffer chassis, this can be mostly be fixed by an adequate roll cage.

Mostly I would do the gsx for the looks and that nobody else has it in seious road racing!

I am talikng about the EVO III. Might be able to get an EVO V but for sure I can get the EVO III. But since I already have the GSX and the looks are way better, I think I am going to stick with it and begin the mod fest unless someone shows me the light.

At least here in the states an Evo III is unheard of, personally I'd get that. I don't know much about the older Evo's but I would think in the long run it's a bit better car than the GSX. Just my opinion.

AFAIK the EVO 1-2-3 are all 6 bolt

Actually all of the EVO's are 7bolt. The 6 bolt motors will only be found in the 89.5-92.5 first gens and the Galant VR4.

http://www.roadraceengineering.com/4g63motorsearch.htm Read about the Evo motors.

http://www.camskill.co.uk/products.php?plid=m8b0s281p771 this is a 1g 7 bolt tensioner

1g 7 bolts were on Evo 1, 2, 3.
2g 7bolts were on Evo 4,5
2g 99 split thrust was on Evo 6
Evo 7,8,9 new 7bolt split thrust

ups, I was wrong. Sorry. One question timm98gst and jdnsbr, does that mean that they suffer from crankwalk also?

Yes, unfortunately it does. They all suffered from this until the split thrust bearings.

There are a few small cases I have heard about crank walk in the Evo's even with the split thrust bearings in the later years. But I have yet to experience it.

I guess my 98 GSX vs EVO III problem just got solved. If I don´t find a really good deal on a EVO IV or newer very soon, the GSX is going under the knife. Thanks guys.

I am assuming your 98 has crankwalk? If so there are a couple options.

1. Rebuild 7 bolt. When doing this take the oil squiters out and weld the squirters shut. The reasoning behind this is simple. The Mains are basically the last part to see oil. If you weld the squirters shut they are no longer starving the mains for oil. Therefore this lessens the chances for crankwalk.

2. 6 bolt Swap

3. Look very hard for a 99 split thrust motor. Good luck though.

To tell you the truth, I have not experienced crankwalk yet, but it kills me to think about rebuilding my engine and then have that thing kill my motor. The 99s don´t have the crankwalk problem?

Also, the are a few EVO IIIs here that have rebuilt their engine and none of them have failed at the road course, eventhough they are 7 bolt. I like to do the things right the first time and wouldn´t want to experience the crankwalk after rebuilding my 98 4G63.

The 99's still have to occasional crank walk issue because they were the first split thrust bearing motors for the 4g63. In 99 they used small split thrusts. This helped the issue but the possibility is still there even though it is slight. There are many ideas out there about crankwalk....IMO the best one so far is poor oiling issues. :toobad:

any engine can crankwalk - from what i heard though, the 7bolts made in japan are much less prone than the ones made in the usa
