So I got this check engine light twice last night. It has something to do with insufficient egr flow or something like that ... could this just be a vaccum leak? My leak tester keeps poping off the turbo so I'm having a hard time finding any leaks. What sensor is in charge of the egr? Just the MAP sensor? Thanks.

I'm thinking the map sensor is leaking a little bit between it and the intake manifold ... I have really slow spool up and the check engine light is coming on every 20 miles or so so that's gotta be it. Any other ideas?

Well, you could fab up a little egr blockoff and see if that clears the code.

I know my friend was getting about 4 codes, one being a malfunc. egr valve. We just took it off, sprayed some brake cleaner in there, and got everything good and clean, and it didnt throw the code again (for the egr). It was due to the egr not opening cause it was all clogged.

help!!! I got rid of the egr system by making the block off plate and getting rid of all the bs vaccum lines, but I still threw the code after about 20 miles. I looked up the code and it means " EGR flow fault " .... any ideas? I don't like CELs...

I got that CEL code, and turns out a vaccuum line had fallen off. Check your underhood vaccuum line diagram and make sure all the lines are ok, then I think you can check the EGR solenoid by hooking a vaccuum pump to it and pumping it up to the amount of vaccuum that should make it open, and if it does open your car will stall IIRC. I'm foggy because I had this process explained to me once but I never tried any of it since the vaccuum line solved the problem first. Try getting a repair manual, it should tell you how to troubleshoot the EGR system.

as i have said many times.......removing the egr on a gen 2 ABSOLUTELY WILL GIVE YOU A CEL.....PERIOD!!!!! let this be a lesson to anybody that tells you otherwise, the way to get rid of the cel is hook the egr back up or go to a standalone system, or re-chip your ecu if you have a 95 ecu............. :dsm:

ok I think you guys aren't reading my posts right .. I WAS getting a cel for that BEFORE I got rid of the egr. I thought 1 of those lines is probably messed up so I just ditched the whole egr system TO FIX THE CEL. Now it still pops on ... same code. All sensors are still plugged in just no vaccum lines going to them.

If you're getting a CEL that basically says "your EGR isn't working," I don't get how taking out the EGR completely would make the computer think it's working again. I think you should put all the EGR stuff back and try to fix it, or else the light would always be on, wouldn't it? If you don't have any EGR the computer will always think it's broken, right?

2g's check for proper EGR operation by:

1) resistance on EGR solenoid

and

2) "proper" value returned from MDP sensor.

Vacuum leaks of any kind will whack the MDP sensor values. Removing electronics will break #1 :) Note that looping the EGR valve out of the vacuum lines doesn't seem to cause the CEL... Apparently whatever differential it's looking for on the sensor is not actually affected by proper EGR valve operation. Kinda stupid. IMO, the 1g setup (temp sensor on the EGR valve) was a much better way to check for proper operation.

any body got a straight pic of the egr valve and solenoids cuz i got the same prob to.....

Some of the mechanical parts that the vaccuum lines connect to could have gone bad, so don't count that out.

I've been running with a blockoff between my EGR valve and the intake manifold for months, and this weekend I took it off and left the EGR solenoid plugged in with the vacuum lines removed and Guess what? I've never gotten a CEL. If you're getting a CEL, it MUST be from the EGR solenoid, because the ECU monitors the valve operation through the solenoid. Healthy solenoid -> no codes, EGR or no. It sounds like you just need a new solenoid, or DSMLink to ignore the code.

Yep. Been struggling with it for almost 2 years now. Just suddenly started happening one day. Only thing I haven't changed out yet is the MDP sensor. Problem is, I can't find it... (1g head intake manifold installed by a previous owner, not sure where on earth they put the MDP and I really don't know what it looks like anyways as there aren't any 2g's in my area that I can look at).

i've been having the code for a month now....
i just drive with da damn light on now untill i can find time to get a new egr valve

i just got my first talon its a 95 tsi and it throws the same code P0400 and i just keep reseting it threw the pocket logger and the car seems to run great the guy i got the car from said it throws that code because he unhooked the emissions so i was wondering should i look into having this fixed even though the car runs good or could it somehow hurt the car thanks

my car did it before emissions removal. Dsmlink has a feature where you can have it not check for certain codes so the light won't pop on for that reason anymore then. Problem fixed ;)

did you remove emissions? How do you know it's the valve thats screwed up?

i've reset it for the 3rd time by taking out the battery and after getting a full 3" exhuast and gunning it on the high way the light doesn't come on anymore

i guess the free flowing exhust did it for me.
the turbo needed to breath
