Slow to boost/dark smoke

Need some help here....

When I start building boost in second gear, I can feel it start to build, It should make full boost @ 3000 or so (my car is almost completely stock, free mods only) but it doesn't. I start feeling it build and then it seems to level off. From about 4000 to 5000 RPMs it seems real sluggish and my exhaust puts out quite a bit of dark smoke (not blue, or white) Then at about 5100 rpms, it kicks in....full boost lots of power.. What could be causing this? Smelling the exhaust, it doesn't seem like oil, and I don't appear to be losing any oil. It looks to me that I am runnning rich from 4-5k rpms. Any help would be great. I'm a poor college student, so it would be really nice if I could fix this myself for little cost.

If there is anyone in the Lansing, MI. area with a Datalogger, I think that might help diagnose....

Anyone with ideas what to check let me know.

turbo shaft play, oil on turbo compressor wheel
 
Your Running Pig rich. My car is basically stock with a 14b, Fuel Pump and Regulator and I was running 9.7:1 AFR. And anyone that knows ratio's that is horrible. DSM's run rich. Thats all that it sounds like to me
 
Thats what I thought, but why would it just starting happening? I've been driving it for almost a year, and it just started doing this. If it is just rich, what is the cheapest way to fix it?

Any ideas? Oh, something I forgot to mention.... On the highway, if I am traveling about 60mph, put it in 4th gear to accelerate, pedal to the floor, nothing....I stay at 60mph and there is nothing but dark smoker from my exhaust.

Maybe your timing is getting retarded when you go WOT and your ECU dumps fuel to try and save the engine. Mine was doin that when I was tuning my MAFT. I'm in Kalamazoo and I have a 2g logger, but it only logs 3bps. Sucks I know, but I just use it for real-time displays of timing.

i thought stoich afr was 15:1??? dont flame, please explain... thanks

15:1 would be wayyyyyy lean especially for a forced induction car.

14.7 is the perfect ratio for power's sake.

oh wow, im retarded... forget my comments, i totally read the afr wrong.. i was thinking 9.7:1 was more air and less fuel then 15:1 for some reason... thats why i thought that would be super lean and he was saying it was rich, which is why i asked... sorry guys, brain fart
 
Well, after thinking about this a while I reasoned that if I was leaking metered air, that would make the car run rich. I didn't have a leak tester so I just visually inspected all the intake piping (Intake, Intercooler Pipes, BOV, etc...) Nothing noticably wrong. I decided to take off my intercooler to clean it out. While I was at it I disconnected all piping and cleaned that out as well. I put it all back on making sure that all the connections were nice and tight and now the car runs great again. Thanks for everyones help, sure glad that it wasn't something more. :thumb:
