ok, so i didnt get any answers from my last thread other than to pull the codes, wich my car didnt read any. i used the buzzer to determine this and got a constant buzz on and off, meaning nothing is wrong. Well, the problem is definately there!!! I will be driving normally and all of a sudden the car will try to shut off and i hear a clickin, (sounds like form th ecu, or possibly fuel pump) then about two seconds later it will run perfect again. the car is very high mileage (my 1g) at 188k miles, but almost EVERYTHING is new. it drives perfect other than this one problem. sometimes it does this worse when im parking in a parking lot and turning the wheel, last time it actually died on me (its died twice). also when the car gets out of this prblem i can hear the click again. When this problem occurs it hits very hard and the car jerks once very BADLY. im scared to drive it. SOMEBODY PLEASE HELP!!!!
 
You never know, it could be your ECU. Have you ever noticed an odd smell inside your car? I have heard sometimes they can smell bad when the capacitors start leaking, almost a fishy kinda smell. You might also want to check your wires, make sure they are not cross-firing. Check your plugs, see what they look like. Does the car do it when you first start driving it at all? Or does your car warm up first, and then start this? -Ross
PS, i have an ECU brand new, never been used from feb 2000, there are 3 stickers on it. I opened it to see if it were an eprom, but it's not. :(
 
thanks a lot for responding, its hard to find people to respond to an odd case like this. there is no fishy smell, or any weird type of smell. it has accel wires but im not sure how old they are, i will check the plugs and make sure the wires are all sealed well and not cross firing. i just got this car (92 non turbo) and its had this problem since i got it (its only been about a week!). it seems so happen when its warm. it also has a rough idle at startup for about 15 seconds, then goes to a perfect idle and runs smooth. i thought it might be the fuel pump, but im having second thoughts because that would only happen at wot, this is just a random problem that occurrs at any rpm at any time. the cel wont keep on so i cant pull the codes. i know on my 95 talon it stores the codes even if the cel is off, but this one doesnt. please respond with your thoughts
 
On my 91, I went ahead and turned off the engine, and then tested my codes. It should tell you, I used a beeper on mine, counted the numbers, and found out it was my throttle position sensor. Also, something you might want to do, get some electrical cleaner, a spray can you should be able find at any car store, and clean the ignition coil, and that other converter (forgot the name of it). On my car (91 AWD) it is located right under the beside the ignition coil, under the FPR. I don't think that is where yours is. It will more than likely have a big clip holding it on, so you will have to pop it off with a screwdriver. On my friends car, his would run rugged every now and then, and sometimes not even start. All we had to do was clean this part, and it got a good connection from then on. Try that, and hope it helps -ross
 
sooo, i bought new plugs and wires, the engine runs a little better now, but i still have the same frickin problem. its actually getting worse and it stalls more often now. i stalled on a right turn lane today and it wouldnt start back up!!! it took about 30+ seconds to start and i was turning on and off the key also. this is beginning to make me think that its for sure the fuel pump or filter. what do you think? ps: the cleaning was a no go also
 
Well it certainly won't hurt to replace the fuel filter, as for the fuel pump, I have a used one from a 91, but I don't know if it is the same thing. I can sell it to you if you'd like, it is in fine condition.
 
I hate to say this if you knew already, but just in case, did you spray the outside of those things? Or the actual connectors? You need to spray the connections, and make sure they are dry when you put it back together. Also, make sure they are real tight in thier place.

Mine did the same thing and it was my ECU that was toast. Remove the ECU, open it up, and check your capacitors. Even if this isn't the case, it still sounds like you've got a problem with your ECU. Your ECU should be storing the codes for later retrieval just like your 2G. If it is not, then your ECU is definately not working properly. Replace it ASAP before it damages your ISC if that hasn't happened already.

thanks for all the respnses. ive already made sure that the batt. wasnt grounding on the hood. sadly that wasnt the problem. i can hear the ecu clicking and that is what is making me think its the ecu. i will still rep[lace the fuel filter, then if thats not it, then the ecu, and then teh pump. ill let you know if i need that pump. thanks a lot for everything. ill let you guys know what fixed it!
 
its your ecu my 91 did it get new caps my 91 would shut off and get a check engine light then it would turn its self back on and the cel would turn off and never logged that a cel was on but i didn't smell mine till i drove it one day with my radio out of the car so the ecu was right there and it smells like shit you will know
 
is it possible to just replace the caps and not replace the whole ECU? i didnt know that was possible. if so let me know where to buy and how to replace them. thanks for the input again. i think im making progress finally!!!!
 
I'm nearly sure it's the ECU that's causing your problems. Persue fixing it. I'm not sure if you can just replace the capacitor.
 
so i ripped open my ecu. looks good right??? WRONG!!! if you look by the white chip sticking out in the circle there is a line of leaky fluid/cracks in the chip. on the other side of it there are some black burn marks (not big at all) this is my problem right? anyone know someone who has an ecu for a 92 nt 5 spd. # MD166255, E2T36572. thanks

Since the chip on your ECU is partially melted, replacing the caps will get you nowhere & in fact your ECU has $0.00 core value. I have recently seen used ones for sale at dsmtrader,dsmauction & I think it was sacdsm or norcal dsm. You'll want to match the part number exactly & also some other mitsu models will use the same PN.
