Finally got my car back $385 dollars and around 1-2months later (really wish I would've just done it myself now). The HG blew, so I went ahead and put on the following parts since it's a 91 AT:

2G ported exh. mani.
Factory 450CC Injectors
Ported 14b turbo

Now, at this point she's exhibiting the following discouraging symptoms:

Bad idle, misses alot while surging.
Anything over 3k RPMs roughly and she starts missing like crazy.
Go full throttle and she makes a lotta noise boosts then starts detonating.
Will even stall out at idle sometimes.

The turbo also has a whistle too it much louder than my 13G and kinda akinned to a tea pot and sounds pretty much like a coal truck turbo. This may just be where it's ported? I dunno.

Anyhow, I have some thoughts on this but would like to know what you more experienced fellas think:

First thing that came to mind - AT ECU with 450cc injectors. Only question is could this cause all these problems? I thought the problems it caused were generally minor.

Next thing is bad injectors as it does sound like a fuel problem. They were of course used injectors.

The scariest thought is the turbo being bad but I dunno - doesn't quite sound like the culprit.

Could be the plugs but I JUST changed them around 1 and a half months ago.

My last though would be a boost leak somewhere as this mechanic was pretty unfamiliar with the car and may have forgotten to rehook something (I really hope not, but you never know).

What do you guys think the likely culprit is?

TIA guys.

could be whoever put your head back on didn't dial in the cams properly when installing the belts.

If the whistling is really loud on your car, it probably is the 14b u put on there. Did you check it over really good for shaft play before u stuck it on there? Shaftplay is usually what will give u the really loud whisting on a bad turbo. That is what happened to my stocker, same symptoms, pulled it out, you could move the saft about 1/16" in a circular motion and back and forth about 1/2". When i put my new Evo on, it was back to normal. Either the turbo, or when u put the 14b on your car, you have a big ass leak somewhere in the piping making that noise. perform a leak down test to see if that is the culprit.

About the injector, if i were you, i wouldn't have bothered with the 450's, cuz soon enough anyways if u are like the rest of us in this forum, u will be upgrading even them. I don't think it was too good of an idea to run used ones either. Your fuel system is very important. Detonation=more hardparts.

You got a damn good deal on a head gasket install? Did some shadetree mechanic do it, cuz that is probably your problem.

I would put your injectors back in, see if it runs any better. If so, keep them in until you are ready for 550's or higher and get your fuel controller to manage everything. Guessing is not a good idea.

When you say leakdown test do you mean an actual leak down test (I have a tester) or a boost leak test (home made deal)?

On the injectors, I don't think the 390s that I have will work on the 14b. I really don't plan on going anything higher than the 14b either. The 14b only had very very minimal side to side play and no back and forth. One time the car did boost ok and it had fair acceleration. It sounds like the loud whistling is coming through the vents too.

This is so GD disappointing and frustrating.

boost leak test. (home made deal)

yeah, i agree, for your 14b with boost at 15-17psi, your stock injectors will not flow enough. You will have to upgrade them, i was just saying that you shouldn't have put used ones in there and gotten you some 550's for it w/ an afc and have it tuned. Plus you could turn your boost up to around 18 psi then. I did a swap with my friends toyota supra to a jdm engine with only 30k miles on it and we left the injectors on it and they were clogged up and shit and we had to take the intake manifold and fuel rail all out again just to put his injectors of his bad engine back in it.

Alright check the NGKs I just put in in Nov. They all had some carbon buildup, and two had light oil on them. This something to be concerned about?

I was going to change the injectors but I am buying an MT ECU to make sure it's not because the AT ECU can't properly control the 450s (they seemed to stress this on dsmtalk).

If not that, I guess I'll change the injectors back in and try from there unless anyone has any ideas.

TIA guys,

that is fuel cut.

At WOT you will feel a quick slamming of the engine, like you just hit a huge ass hole in the road or something.

carbon on your plugs is normal, but i don't think oil is too good, that means you are getting oil in your cylinders and you are burning oil.

Just get an oil/fuel gauge and tune it...LOL:D

if it isn't too bad, i wouldn't worry too much about it now, just keep running it till it blows then get a short block or jdm. That's what i would do with it. I am poor though, if you have some dinero, i'm sure you can get a nice set up, all depending on how serious you are with racing.
