My car has been having some interesting electrical issues I could use some help diagnosing...

The power wire that connects to the alternator fuse on the battery side came free and slapped around apparently, but what that could cause related to my issues I am not sure, however it seems to be directly related...

I got in my car and my headlights and tail lights are flickering. I am only reading 12.1 volts and since I have cams, the lope is causing my alternator to not charge consistently and causing the flicker. I rev up the engine and my alt voltage goes up to about 12.9 and the head lights get brighter until they both just turn off....voltage drops down to just the battery.

I check under the hood and the electrical line from the bat to the alt fuse is free. I begin to reconnect in and as I dothe head lights flicker on and off, but then it stops with just the passenger side head light on. Their flickering seemed to be indepent of each other.

In addition to this, I find out that ONLY my 3rd brake light is working.

Any ideas?

If you rev and the lights get brighter and other things work better i.e heat blows harder interior light get brighter then your volatge regulator is malfuntioning..as for the other stuff I would have to look at it in person to help(sorry for some things Im a visual learn). Good luck Andrew

With the key off the large B+ lead should read battery voltage. If not you have an open circuit between the Alt. and the battery. Usually this will be the large fusable link ... 80A, 100A, or 120A will be burned, reports of loose connections on the underside, tighten those.

With the engine running using a test light clipped to ground probe the 2 small wires, 1 wire will be battery voltage the other will be half as bright. If not the Alt. must be removed for further inspection, repair or replacement.

As for headlights this could be burned fuse bad motor and or adjustment. Rear tail lights could be burned bulbs or fuse. Use a test light on the fuses while installed, the terminals extend through the plastic and can be probed. Bulbs are a simple visual inspection for broken / burned filaments.

Cheers,
GTM
