Does anyone else have this problem with their n/t spyder. Mine is a manual and under acceleration it has a valve chattering, whistling, dieseling sound kinda noise. It doesn't do it at idle or cruising down the road until you apply the gas. The more throttle you apply the louder it gets. I thought it was the restrictive intake and exhaust so they were replaced but it didn't seem to help. It seems to have made it louder. I'm afraid that there might be some sort of valve timing problem or something of that sort. The noise seems to be coming from the valves or in the head somewhere. Or at least that is what it sounds like. Anyone else have or had this problem or does anyone have a clue how to fix it? Any ideas:confused:

Hey, I have the same problem! I have a 99 GS though (n/t). There are no performance mods on the car (not even the bolt-ons). I do have a 4in tip on my muffler though. From what I hear, it sounds like it's coming from my exhaust pipe (somewhere beyond the cat). It goes away when I idle and when I push in on the clutch. But if I push in on the clutch and give it some gas and rev the engine the whistle comes back. The higher the rpm's the louder and higher pitch it gets. The only thing I can guess is that somehow the tip on my muffler is creating some kind of backpressure or I have a small hole somewhere in my exhaust pipe. I can tell a definite difference in power between the car with the whistle (GS) and my other eclipse (RS) that runs great. If you have and suggestions they would greatly be appreciated.

Well, mine is not really a whistle so to speak. It sounds more like valves chattering or something. Kinda like a semi truck and what is called dieseling. Only a little higher pitched. I am pretty sure its not in my exhaust from the cat back cause I replaced it a couple days ago with a Borla system. I custom made a 3" intake for it with an open K&N filter. It seemed to fix it at first but I think it was just cause I wasn't used to the different sound resulting from the int & exh swap. Now it just seems the same. Idling doesn't do it, you can rev it at idle and it makes a little noise, but most of the time it sounds the loudest and the worst when its under load. Like normal 0-60 acceleration and worse during passing. I don't know what it is. Someone said it could be the timing belt. But it seems OK, has plenty of power; no funny idle or anything. Just that noise. Its really aggravating; more frustrating because no one seems to know how to fix it.

I'm pretty sure it’s not my belts because I just hade them replaced (55,000k check-up). It might be coming from the engine but it sound like its coming from behind me (if I’m sitting in the driver’s seat). My car is lowered a lot and I was thinking that time after time after time of scraping the pipes underneath the car that I could have a small hole. But I don't think so because I don't hear a whistle at idle. I only hear it when I’m giving it gas/coasting.

You may be right, yours could be your exhaust. Though I think mine has to do with the engine. Your car has the 2.0, where mine is the 2.4, that makes a little difference. But your might be the exh. Maybe someone could step in and throw an idea in about mine. I'm sure I'm not the only person to ever have this problem.

im having a whistling/whining sound too. but mine is turbo and i tohught it was my turbo but theres no shaft play. :-\ :( the car bucks when I stay on it tho (not flooring it, just leaving it at the point it keeps whistling)

Yours could possibly be a boost/IC leak. Use the search box to look for the thread on boost leaks. I still haven't gotten any definite answers to my question though. She's still whistlin! If anyone can help it would be appreciated. Not looking for certain answers; any good ideas could help solve the problem! Thanx!:thumb:

I had the same kinda chattery, whistley, poopy sound too. It sounded like it came from the engine and valves, but i listned harder and found that the heat shield right after the connection in the exaust manifold to the downpipe, try taking it off once and see if it sounds any better.

The exhaust has already been replaced. I'm pretty sure that isn't it. See I replaced the intake and exhaust thinking that WAS it. But with no luck it wasn't. Any other ideas?
