i was driving to school and i heard a rubbing noise or it sounded like it. when i was at a stop light i reved it up alittle bit a and the noise got fatser not louder. the noise was coming from the front drivers side tire, where the timing belt is. so when i got into the parking lot, i let off the gas and my car just died. so i pulled into a parking spot to see what was wrong. i tried to start my car and it didnt crank over. so i popped my hood and i had my friend sit in the driver's seat and had him try to start it. this is the wierd part, the pullys turned but the cams werent moving. so i had it towed to my house and i got it in the garage. i jacked it up and took off th tire. i was expecting to see the timing belt broken, but it wasnt. the timing belt was ripped in the middle but it was still attached. and thats how far i got. i just want to know if anyone experianced with this before.

just so you know i have a '91 eagle talon tsi, if that helps.

please help. share your ideas.

thanks,
john

Still attached? What do you mean?

So the timing belt is still an "O" or a "U" now?
In other words, is it still in one continuous piece or is it broken? If you were to take it off, would it be a rope or a loop?

The timing belt is a "U"/rope/broken, you have a broken timing belt and you just better hope it didn't do much damage to the head/valves.

it ripped but not enough for the timing belt to break. its still a O not a U.

so u think the timing belt could of slipped when it got ripped?

why would the crank shaft pully still turn and the cams sprockets not turn when im trying to crank it over? cause the belt is still attached.

thanx

It prolly lost all the teeth on the belt down by the crank and it has nothin to grip on so the crank is just spinning. just my guess, hope it helps :thumb:
