St. Louis,
Well I've taken my beater car, 1990 Plymouth Laser RS Turbo with 92,000 miles, to emissions twice now and it's failed both times. I bought the car knowing it wouldn't pass emissions based on what the previous owner told me.

A few weeks ago I decided to clean the combustion chambers using this method here... http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=85446&highlight=chamber*

First Test:
HC: 1.8963 FAIL (need 0.8 to pass)
CO: 10.2917 PASS (need 15.0 to pass)
NOx: 3.4229 FAIL (need 2.0 to pass
CO2: 350.1882 (Advisory, no affect on fail/pass)

So I checked to make sure the car had all the vacuum lines hooked up which it did. The car was owned by an older man, probably in his 60s, so I doubt he ever disconnect any of the emission lines, but I checked that anyway and everything was good.

I put a new O2 sensor in. It wasn't exactly new, but off a n/t 4g63 from the junkyard. I spliced the 4 wires into the original 4 that go into the wiring harness. After that I tested the EGR system. I found out that the thermo valve was bad and it was not maintaining vacuum so I went to the junkyard on Sunday (in the rain :( ) and pulled two thermo valves. Went home and tested them in a hot pot of water and one was broken and the other worked, so good thing I got two. Put the working thermo valve in and then I pulled the EGR valve. It was covered with soot so I cleaned it out with some carb cleaner and tested it and the needle inside moved up when I applied vacuum.

Went back to emissions today and I failed again. Some guy did the Gas Cap Test and when he went to pull the car foward onto the rollers he REVs it up to redline for a sec... I'm kind of like ok hmmm.. So he pulls onto the rollers with the rear wheels on them. I'm banging on the glass pointing backwards, but he never hears me. He trys to get the car rolling on the rollers and it stalls. Then some lady comes up and tells him it's FWD. Well he backs it up and has the front wheels rolling. He had trouble getting it to drive straight so she had to take over. Then I found out I failed again.

Second Test:
HC: 2.0082 FAIL (need 0.8 to pass) <-- Went up
CO: 9.2677 PASS (need 15.0 to pass) <-- Went down
NOx: 2.9777 FAIL (need 2.0 to pass) <-- Went down
CO2: 344.0624 (Advisory, no affect on fail/pass) <-- Went down

Here's a picture of the graph... It's a pretty big picture so give it time to load.

So does anyone have any suggestions? I know there's the stuff you put in your gas tank that guaranties to make you pass, but from what I understand is that you have to go through a full tank of gas first. With the car not legal to drive it would take a while for that. I have to put the plates from my Eclipse on it when I take it to emissions.

Also will adding alcohol to the tank of gas help improve my numbers enough to make me pass? Would it be wise to find a way to leave the wastegate open so the turbo basically builds no boost? In the graphs it looks like it's failing pretty much anytime they are on the gas pedal.

So give me your suggestions! I just want this car too pass so I can drive it for a few months while I sell the Eclipse and look for a new one. I really don't want to pay $400 in work to get a wavier. The car cost $600 and spending $400 just because I live in St. Louis County would really suck.

Thanks!

for the Nox or whatnot, try cleaning out the port where the egr hooks up to, mine was really built up with carbon and the other day when i took my intake mani off that end had a bunch of carbon too. and might work for you but for my sisters olds that junk that says youll pass didnt work:(

either way i feel you, goodluck,
jeff
