Speedometer went crazy, Please help!!

I was driving my 2g Eclipse when my speedometer started going crazy. I wont read at a constrant speed unless i let go of the gas, but goes crazy again when i accelerate, reads up to 160 then goes back down and then back up, and when trying to accelerate fast it stalls for a second untill i let go of the gas. My mileage keeps going up as if i was going as fast as the speedometer reads. Someone please help me fix this problem.

sounds like a speed sensor.

The little brown plug has come loose on the sensor, top of the transmission. Picture here:

You bet. Mine wanders off about every two months. Someday I'll give it a dab of glue or something.
