Guelph,
i was haivng a problem like a few other members here.
my idle was jumping up and down, i took it to my mech and he said he was getting a check engin light, which i was not getting.
anyways
he said it was my mass airflow sensor...
what would you expect to pay for that part ?

Did you get the trouble codes pulled, i had the same problem for a little while, but it when away, my check engine light is on, so i got it read and there were four codes that came up. I think it is my maf too, not really sure, but i hear you can find a used in a junk yard for cheap, i seen one on ebay for $40, its used.

my mech said that only the OEM MAFS are that expensive though.. he said he could probly find a part a lot cheaper then that and it would be just as good

If it is the MAF, then yes, get a used one. It's going to be just as good as a new one, and like 1/10th the cost.

Also, your S-AFC could very well be causing the problem, especially if you connected it wrong (did you do it, or did someone else? Did you hook it up, and immediately start having these problems, or had you had it working for a while before?).

You sure it isn't idle surge and the mechanic is just trying to bend you over? A non OEM MAF that will "work just as well", my ass. If there is a CEL, pull the codes and go from there.

To the person with 4 codes...might be your ECU. My car threw a baro pressure, coolant temp, and two other codes when the ECU shit the bed.

Well I got my car back today...

A new Mass Airflow sensor was put in and a few adjustments within my ECU.
Anyways
I drove of with it and it sounded great
about 10 minz out the idle sounded a little unstable
and a few stops later my idle was jumping up and down just like it was before...
it even climbs high when I start it and then goes into the hole jumping idle routine..

This is getting to me…
My mech won’t be getting his money that’s for certain.

Does anyone know of any Reputable Mechanics in the Toronto/Ontario Area?

Cheers: Jonathan Hughes

THe idle problem may just be idle surge. I have 20 people a day on the way to work thinkinhg I'm revving at them, but my ISC is toast, so I just try not to look over.

Your problem is the IDLE SPEED CONTROLLER. The ECU will not throw a code if that piece is bad, at least on the 2G's. My advise is to find a throttle body with a good ISC attached and give it a try. Its only a few 10 mm bolts and its easy to get to. You should be able to pick one up at a junk yard for around 50 bucks.

Sounds to me like your mechanic took you for a spin. I've seen many idle surge problems be fixed because of the ISC being faulty. Read up on what the ISC does and then you can understand your problem a little better. There is a section in the technical write ups about idle surge. I'm almost 99.9% sure that is your problem.

Let me also add try disconnecting your ISC and see how your car reacts. If it acts the same that should be a good indicator. There are ways to test the ISC with an OHM meter to see if you have the correct resistance across the stepper coils.

Could this be my problem too??

"Two days ago my 95 Talon Esi started a weird idle problem. It idles at 2,500 rpms, then after awhile it drops to 1,400 and back up to 2,500 (sometimes it just stays at 2,500-3,000 for a couple of minutes). It does this continuously as if i were reving the engine, also the engine light came on. I thought maybe bad gas, so i put in 93 octane, I also put in fuel injection cleaner, but it still does it. As far as the performace, everythings running great, the car shows no signs of problems unless I stop in traffic or at a light. What the hell can this be? please help, I don't know what to do!"

that sounds kinnda like whats wrong with mine..
its spikes high when i start it
then i drops to around 1400 and then spikes back and fwarth from 1400 - 1600 sort of thing
but the performance is great

i was driving my car today to get some gas and the probly just fixed itself
it was fine

then it came back agian when i was driving home
by the time i got home it was gone again....
very odd
gonna get the ICS checked on thursday
