I bought a 14B, and it spins freely (doesn't hit the top/sides) but if I flick the blade and let go, it barely turns on its own. Its also very small to get my finger in there (I expected the 14B to be much bigger, but it is a td05h 14b)

Just how freely should it turn after being flicked? And if the turbo has been off of an engine for a while, can it just be cause theres no oil that it isn't spinning very well? Any ways I can test it out?

I noticed that the Garretts always spin better than the mitsu turbos, so maybe I am just simply used to them.

One other thing about the turbo, it has 2 bad cracks where the wastegate is, could that of made the turbo leak and work extra hard to get the required boost?

Really appreciate any help.

If its spinning with little or no effort then you outta be ok. Unless anyone thumps rather hard, I dont think thats going to test it very well.

If the cracks are in the housing like im thinking, then they are pretty normal. I wouldnt worry unless they get pretty massive. I have a 7cm housing on my talon right now, and it has cracks all over the place, works fine for me. Actually...seems to be the only thing that works fine right now.

In the last few days I found that it spins pretty freely when I spin from the turbine side (cause its bigger/easier to get my fingers in there) There is a tiny bit of shaft play up/down, but it doesn't make the blades hit or anything and I heard that a little bit is normal. No play long ways at all.

One thing that worries me is when it is totally silent and I flick the blade and listen very closely, while it spins it makes this sound as if sand was inside (like a scraping noise).

Is the turbo supposed to spin very silent? Does the sound mean something is wrong with the bearing? It spins freely while it makes that noise, but if I spin it that slow and hear something, I can't imagine how it would be at 15000 RPM when its on the car.

If anyone4 hears this and its normal, please let me know, any feedback is greatly appreciated.

Oh yeah, there is also a lot of old oil build up on the center cartridge, I don't know if it was from a leaky valve cover on the previos car, or if the turbo leaks, if it got on the outside somehow.

Well the 14b doesn't have bearings for one thing. It is a bushing setup. I don't know what you heard, but pour a bit of engine oil in and see how it spins. Just make sure to pour it in the oil line. It is going to be stiff anyways though since it isn't getting good oil circulation. Most turbos I seen had a bit of up and down play. Nothing to worry about. Its hard to tell the condition of a turbo until you try it out.
