Ok guys I am a little worried....I know smoke somes out of an exhaust...cause...its an exhaust....but I let some1 drive my car today and I saw that person drive it and I would notice like puffs/clouds of smoke not that big but very noticeable come out the exhaust whem my freind would hit it or shift gears? Is this normal because I noticed that others cars dont do this. And all my friends own Subarus, Rx-7s, Supras, 240s. I am the only DSM owner and I dont know if its just a DSM thing or what? Is it normal or do I have a problem on my hands? Any help would be great. Thanks

check for shaft play, pretty easy take your intake off and move around the shaft in the turbo, check side to side and in and out. it should not have any play at all, also what color is the smoke?

I also had this problem but i thought it was because i didnt have a cat and full 3 inch exhaust everytime i shift smoke. I knew i had some shaft play but i was getting rid of the toogay ne way so i didnt care much. When i put on my new turbo no smoke the shaft play had gotten so bad it was in and out and a bad oil seal. But most turboed cars when u mash on them a cloud of black smoke (carbon) is not uncommon.

in reply to the shaft play post...

its not tru ur not suppose to have no play...if that were the case ur turbo would seize up....there has to be very very minimal give

so if u do feel some...when i say some....i mean minimal
its good

but not having any shaft play will seize the turbo

umm dude, i have no shaft play and my tubo is strong as hell. the shaft shouldn't wiggle AT ALL!!!

I will check to see if the turbo has any shaftplay later on in the day. I would be pist if the turbo is gone because thats what happened with the T-25 it had mad shaftplay when I took it out, but what would cause the turbo to go bad??? I mean i just installed the b16g no less than a month ago and I dont think it could be seized already, or could it??? BTW the color of the smoke is white when it idles normal, and it seems to have a tint of black when shifting gears.

The white could be water checkyour water level and see if its normal. If it is your are just runing a little rich. The black when you shift is just carbon i wouldnt worr about that.

all of you need to get your s@#t straight.
The turbo (unless its ball bearing) should have NO axial (in/out) play, but should have a tiny amount of up/down/left/right play. As scurred whitey said, you would have a seized turbo if there wasn't any play. That minimal play is there for oil to surround the shaft inside the CCA. The shaft when spinning is using this oil (very thin layer) as it's "bearing" so to say.

So again, minimal left/right play and NO AXIAL play(in/out)

To further refine my prior post.
Axial (in/out) play indicated wear on the thrust bearing which is why when under heavy boost people see blue smoke out the tailpipe. Typically smoke will only be noticed during boost and not idle or non-boost cruise. If you have smoke then, it's likely valve stem seals, guides, rings, blah blah, blah blah.
Hope this helps
