I decided to replace the electrolytic capacitors that are known to go bad in the 1G ECU's, and I find that a previous owner has that entire area submerged in gray RTV sealant. Would this be an effective fix? I'm assuming it was just a preventative effort since everything works fine. It's on there pretty good so i figured I'd just leave it (rather than risk doing more damage from trying to remove it), I just wanted to see if anyone has heard of using this method.

They have probably already replaced the capacitors then, am I correct? The sealant is just there because the circuit boards have a coating protecting the runners and leaking would destroy that coating, leaving the copper to corrode.

As it turns out I had some free time so I picked the sealant out. It took a couple of hours, but it's cleaned out good enough for access now. Everything looks clean, but I want to make sure and toss in some new capacitors anyway. I don't plan on using sealant when I'm done though unless this is a recommended method.

-I don't see how the RTV can prevent damage from leaky cap, the liquid is leaking from the bottom along the leads.
