Engine Rebuild ??

I'm rebuilding the engine from my 91 tsi talon. I have it all apart except for the front case. I can't get the crank sprocket I guess that is what it is called off. It it the part that is connected to the crank shaft pulley. What way do I turn it to get it off. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

If the engine was still in the car, you could have left the timing belt on, put a 1/2 inch drive wrench connected to the Crank Sprocket and have it rest against the axle (careful of what spot u choose and away from the CV boot), then proceed to turn the ignition on for a brief second...enough to break the Crank Sprocket loose. Thats the technique I used when I removed my Balance Shafts. If the engine is out of the car, maybe rent an Impact Gun that can handle more then 80lbs of torque (since thats how tight the sprocket is from the factory).
Or maybe just crack-down and buy the special 'tool' from SATAN

Go to www.vfaq.com and look under timing belt, they show you how to make a tool to hold the crank still, they say use it for torquing the nut, but im sure if you made it right it would work for removing it as well.

I ran into the same problem rebuilding mine, I ended up wedging a 2x2 through the cylinder bore and main bearing girdle to keep the crank from spinning. Also if your engine has some mileage it will probably take more than the factory torque specs to get it off, I ended up using a 3' cheater pipe.
