I have a 99 non turbo eclipse 2l (rs).
My son put in platinum plugs. Car soon began to miss and backfire off idle. He replaced the plug wires and it ran great. Three weeks later, same thing. Now changed wires 3 times and they last 2-3 weeks. Is there some kind of heatr shield that is supposed to go on the plug wires where they are in the valve cover? (The last plub box said some cars have them.)
Could it be the plugs making this happen?
Thanks.

I would suggest taking out those plugs and putting in a good set of NGK's. Platinum plugs burn much hotter than normal plugs in order to burn off carbon deposits. I would not recommend them at all since they spark so hot, which could be the cause of your idle problems

Thanks, Hyena. I put in some NGK splitfire plugs. Runs great, and I didn't replace my plug wires again. So, I guess that when I'd clean off the plugs and check the color they worked for a few weeks. I assumed the wire change each time fixed it. I was going to change the coil pak and plugs but could only get plugs... saved me a few bucks. I'll repost if it craps out in another 3 weeks, (course $8 plugs beat $40 wires all to heck!)
Thanks.
